Peeling chrome part on long extension - sand + ? paint? - what do you do?

Knock off the flakes, then try rubbing it out with WD-40 and aluminum foil. I've used that to clean up bicycle parts and the legs on a vintage modern chair. Good on your for trying to fix it up instead of throwing it in the trash.

What is the quality/reputation of Park Tool relative to car tool brands?

I would argue that one of Park Tool's best tools is their Youtube channel, and you get that for free. Calvin is a natural teacher and I think their videos on derailleur tuning are the best around.

Tekton selling off remaining ratcheting wrench inventory as open stock

Email also shares details about the future program: "Our product team is working hard to make a new, complete line of ratcheting wrenches and sets available—ideally within the year. We expect the new program to include reversibles, flex heads, and more. Additional details will follow."

    Icon 800 lumen light

I agree, having the larger, brighter LEDs on the other side would be better, but the build quality of the Icon over the Braun is what made my decision. The Icon light is a premium product.

What is the quality/reputation of Park Tool relative to car tool brands?

We have a similar benefit to use where I work. It's easy to get swept up in the details of different brands, but the bottom line is if you don't spend the money it goes away, and we're talking free tools here. The non-bike specific basics in the shop tools section of parktool.com has plenty of...

Craftsman shop vac just took a dump. What should I get?

I'd argue against the Ridgid (at least the basic models they stock at HD), I had one for a week and found it to be much louder than any other vac I had tried. It was honestly unbearable.

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

I would agree with that, I only have the torque wrench set and chain checker and both are good for someone like me, a DIYer who takes care of our families bikes, plus any that my neighbors roll over and ask for help with. Looking around their website, I think I would probably lean towards other...

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

Didn't see Pro Bike Tools on your list, but I have the 1/4" torque wrench set and the chain wear checker. Both are very nice, and the torque wrench was highly recommended on many forums. Its a great set. If these two are any indication of the quality of the rest of their tools, I'd buy more...

    HF pliers quality

Skip the HF pliers, most of them are junk. They might get better in the near future since HF seems to be improving the quality on a lot of their hand tools, but the current pliers line up isn't worth consideration. I recommend a set of black handled craftsman. I've had mine for years and...

Guess What I Found at Lowes...

They have them out on display at our Lowes. Meh. They feel sturdy, but I didn't think they were particularily ergonomic or comfortable. IMO, I thought they were less comfortable than some of the other brands. They seem fine, but nothing to get too excited about. If I had to pick between...

How many free HF screwdriver sets do you have?

I have about 5 sets of screwdrivers, 4 multimeters, and tons of flashlight. My favorite freebie is not the screwdrivers or the flashlights, though, it's the work gloves. They aren't the best quality, but it's something that I can actually use. The rest of the stuff gets handed out to the...

Who makes a good oscillating multitool?

HF redesigned their single speed tool. It physically looks just like the variable speed model and does 21k opm vs the 19k on the previous version. http://www.harborfreight.com/oscillating-multifunction-power-tool-68303.html

does anyone else hoard free HF items?

I'll fess up, I've got that habit too. I have tons of flashlights, multimeters, and screwdrivers still in the package. Flashlights have come in handy for the neighborhood kids to play with, they love to play flashlight tag and I never get back as many as I "lent" out. :) My habit is even...

Popular Mechanics Tip for preventing Rusting Tools

I just reuse those desiccant packages that you get whenever you buy electronics, shoes, or anything else wrapped in plastic. Rather than throw them out, I just throw them in the tool box. Works perfectly.
