I use the caliper tool. I've encountered too many calipers where I couldn't get a square grip on the piston due to what was on the outside of the caliper body.

Try putting plastic wrap over the paint stripper. It keeps the stripper from evaporating. Even the "green" paint stripper will work not too bad this way. I stripped an entire stairwell this way using citru-strip as it was winter and I had no way to ventilate properly. It took longer, but, it worked.
Do you have a Dremel? I'd go at that square nut inside the housing. See if you can grind enough of a groove in the side to split the nut itself. Then you might not need much force to spin the bolt out. There should not be any threads in the housing if I know my winch mounts.
I'd spend the extra on the Hobart or similar brand and accept the fact that you may outgrow the machine. But, it's also possible to just tack together the random thicker item and have someone else do the final welding.
