I had something similar with my Saturn. Check the hoses and rubber elbows coming out of engine for holes. The red arrows in my picture are where mine were.

Variable speed is a nice feature to have. If you're going to use it a lot and can afford it go for the gold and buy a Fein or Swiss made Bosch. I have the Bosch, with all the extra accessories and bag you get, it starts to eat away at the price difference. Even comparing the Malaysian and Swiss...

Knockout and Piston are well worth a look. They are more of a traditional design then the curvy **** they have put out in the past. I've owned several Kershaw's and these 2 are the only ones I have now.
