Floating deck with a wrought-iron pergola: many questions

You'll find that common sense and zoning are often mutually exclusive. If/when you go to talk to your building department, bring your plans, supporting code information, etc. and just confirm that you can do what you want to do. Don't just ask them open-endedly what you can do, you may not...

Floating deck with a wrought-iron pergola: many questions

I'm not specifically familiar with LA's zoning codes, but I work with zoning codes in other areas every day. So below is just a quick look at what might affect your project. This site - http://www.ci.la.ca.us/ladbs/permits/bldg_permit.htm - lists patios as requiring a permit, but not...

Help ID these pipe fittings on a great workbench

Sadly, I won't own that work bench - it's on http://www.1stdibs.com/, a great site to look for inspiration, but far out of my reach. I'll save you the registration trouble, they are asking $3,995 for this bench. No, I didn't miss a decimal place. $4k. Who buys this? I'm just keeping this...

Help ID these pipe fittings on a great workbench

The McMaster ones are the best price for polished brass, here's a site I found for Malleable Iron ones... I think this is my best bet. http://www.boundaryfence.net/quickrail2.htm

Bingo, or close enough! http://www.brassrails.com/ball-fittings.html Available in brass or stainless. Not much cheaper than Kee Klamps though... Thanks for the help!

Help ID these pipe fittings on a great workbench

Ok, they could be an antique version of Kee Klamps - http://keesafety.com/products/kee_klamp/catalog. I'll keep looking... anyone else?

Help ID these pipe fittings on a great workbench

I can't seem to find what these are called and if they are still made somewhere... I'm assuming they are antique braze on pipe fittings. Any help with what they are and where they can be located is appreciated. Ken

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT 1950s Craftsman Garage retro remodel

Those pieces of wood are called parallam beams - essentially what you described, but minus the labor of fixing all of the osb together. You can order them in almost any size from your lumberyard. Depending on how you cut and sand it, they can take on some very cool looks.

    Vintage Blackhawk Tool Display Boards

Those boards look great... very tempting to start collecting. One thing - did all of the pegs come with the board and/or have you found a source for replacements? I saw the thread about the nuts to hold them on to the board.

    Zoning Variance for Garage Build

Look up "critical root zone" and how it applies to your tree. If a tree is over 19" diameter here, there are very strict requirements on what you can/can't build in a 9.5' diameter circle around the tree. That may be your only hardship for the variance. They usually don't care about backyard...

Holy ****, thanks steve and larry. I thought I had some good google-fu, but couldn't get the right combination of words. That dome plate is exactly it.

ID help with stamped steel plate

Can anyone help ID the plate in the attached photo? I assume it's a center plate for a tent of some kind, but I'm wondering what it's called and where to buy one or more. Thanks, Ken

Questions on Restoring an old WT Drill Press

I have a delta rockwell benchtop version of that DP. I think mine is mid 60s. It's funny to see that they just replaced the speed chart and name plate. Mine doesn't have the knurled knob on the feed handle. I've only had it a couple months, but it's been a great drill press. Replacement...

Time-Sert 1812CORE kit... GM 3.1/3.4 rocker bolt hole repair.

Thanks for posting this repair method. The back story and real $$ cost make the situation where something like this can and should be done understandable.

    Treated plywood over dirt drive?

I put down thin, untreated plywood as a temporary solution in my dirt-floor carport, to be able to move heavy things around with an engine lift. The concrete floor has been delayed, so the plywood has stayed down for 2 years and has not decayed significantly. Also, I'm in Austin and we haven't...
