    Woodworking Finish: both sides?

    1) Do you finish both sides of panels? 2) If yes, would it be bad to use a different type of finish for the underside/inside? 3) Should both sides be equal in number of coats? So I'm halfway through one of the bigger projects in my young woodworking journey. After foolishly saying "I can build...

Looks like they nixed this deal. Can't seem to get to it via Ryobi site or via HD site anymore. Bummers.

    Handplane iron sharpening

Yes. Another wealth of knowledge for sure. Reading through his articles and watching some of his online video clips helped me find my first plane. That definitely looks like a good book to consider.

    Finally registering in Maine

Yeah I think I'm going to have to start going through her brakes now every time I swap over the Winter/Summer wheels, just to make sure everything is moving well. It's only been a year or so since we used to let the dealership take care of routine service on her car, but I was pretty shocked to...

    Handplane iron sharpening

I'll try this and come up with a plan accordingly. It works in a 'shooting board' type set-up, but I imagine out-of-the-plane usage isolates the effectiveness of the edge and it only. I believe my original restoration process started with around 200 grit or so, but being my first attempt at...

    Handplane iron sharpening

Irons were not new. I'm not 100% certain they were original to the planes, but if not, likely piecemealed from planes give or take a few years (1900-1930). I know it's not saying much, but they at least do shave pine as good as any youtube vid or guide otherwise, so I didn't think they were in...

    Handplane iron sharpening

I'm assuming that this is my issue. So I guess this is also what I'm not able to discern. At times it almost seems like I'm just scraping. Other times, I get tear out. Using a Rockler honing guide, I've been starting with 600 grit paper on a piece of quartz, to a 1000 waterstone (flattened...

    Handplane iron sharpening

Yes. Honing guide is in use, not a Veritas but none the less. And I've one of the stop-block type angle jigs for consistency. These alone have unexpectedly and surprisingly recently turned the chisel into my favorite tool.

    Handplane iron sharpening

Yeah I didn't quite run though all the same on the back. Thanks, I'll try this. I've heard of ways to get a taller angle via back beveling. But I imagine it's not as stable as a dedicated frog? I have a couple other irons I can try this with. Thanks.

    Handplane iron sharpening

Anyone care to share their preferred method of sharpening their plane irons? I have a pair of Stanley Bailey planes (type 10, 13) I've been using but I can't seem to get the irons dialed-in well enough to handle hardwoods. They both shave pine paper thin like butter, but having some issues with...

Thinking about getting an electric impact for the home shop

Or the Makita XWT17, the middle brother to the XWT08. A bit more compact to fit behind wheel hubs and what not, but still can pull off axle nuts when you didn't realize you'd need to (ie: already up on jack stands and rotors pulled off).

    Finally registering in Maine

Yeah in 2011 my employer at the time sent me out to Maine a few times. Reminded me of my favorite parts of California (Tahoe and Mammoth: mountains and trees) but just all over. Even though I've lived in them for years, I'm not a big city guy. Maine just seems to fit better. Man that rust...
