Yes, the drawers roll nice and smooth. Even better when there are tools in them. The detents hold the drawers closed and you can feel them engaging/disengaging.

no real preference. seems to roll and turn fine with them setup like that. I've seen them done both ways, not sure what the pros/cons are to either setup

Sounds like a 56" roller would be best and then add a top if I need more space.
