You have mentioned that you have already tried both screws and nuts & bolts hence my suggestion of using blind rivets. Sure its quicker to use tek screws but you asked for another method.

Assuming the girts are just sheet metal thickness, you may consider using blind rivets which will provide a threaded point.

My workplace was throwing out an old compressor with a 60 litre receiver on wheels; I managed to salvage that and the 3 hp electric motor that was on it. Went by the air compressor shop for some fittings and now I have extra air volume with portable supply when required.
