I hot melt glued the nuts to the radiator shroud I was having trouble reaching recently. Could also Hot melt the nut to hex wrench or socket to hold it.

Bad thread machining results. What am I doing wrong?

What type of lathe? Sure looks like the tool is not being returned into the thread in the correct place each pass. Have you tried threading without disconnecting the half nut? Some lathes you have to Change a gear to thread metric. Could you be trying standard threads with the metric gear in...

    reading a Micrometer

I used to teach new shop employees about screw threads and how to read a mike. I found the best way was to equate it to a $10 dollar bill. Each revolution was worth a quarter. I.E. 4 turns equal $1 etc. They could easily relate to that. I gave a test at the end of the class and as a bonus...

    ZERKS for oiling machinery?

We had a machine at work that had to have oil pumped into a reservoir cylinder under pressure thru a zerk. Special guns were made for this and expensive. We used one of those small handheld grease gins that take the 1" round grease tubes and just filled the gun with hydraulic oil in place of...

What is the best method to drill into hardened steel?

What Dieselnut88 said. We routinely opened up holes in hardened tool steel 60rc with carbide end mills in a Bridgeport. Low rpm. Worked great.

But...but...what if my idea is worth millions! or a at least several dollars?!

I am no expert on this but a couple of things I have been told working with a patent attorney in the past on trademarks. I talked to him about something I thought was patentable but there was no real market for it. If you make your idea or product known to the public, (IE like on this forum) you...

    Bearing support for vertical shaft?

Assuming you are using mounted bearings, get the cam lock type. They grip the shaft a lot better than the set screw ones. Used them on a machine we manufactured with a vertical 1" spindle that took a lot of axial abuse and they worked great.

    Light duty Jib crane

On something like this I would use a 12 pitch thread. A lot easier to thread. Less material removal and the carriage is traveling at 1/2 the speed of 6 pitch towards the shoulder. Nuts are easily purchased. Nice work.

    Ceramic tile over vinyl

I have a 4 x 6 bathroom with a vinyl or linoleum type floor ( one solid piece) that was installed in the 70's. I want to put down ceramic tile. The existing floor is stuck to the concrete extremely well. Can I scuff it up and lay the tile over it or am I asking for problems later?

    Which stainless ?

303 Is the easiest to work with but you may have trouble finding a small piece of it. If you can thread with fine threads, it will be a lot easier than coarse threads. I have done 304 fine with a die nut no problems, just get it started straight.

Do 1/2" nuts get brittle from welding?

A 2H nut conforms to ASTM A194 for nuts for high temp/ high pressure piping. Typibpcally used with B7 stud bolts in flanges and are heavy hex. It calls for a minimum carbon content of 0.40 which is not a low carbon nut. They are heat treated to 24 to 38 Rc. I am no expert on welding but would...

    10' Straight edge

40 Years ago when I worked in a cabinet shop, we had a homemade jig for cutting bowed hardwood straight. It was a straight piece of 1x6 or so that had a short piece of wood screwed on the end perpendicular. You would put this next to the table saw fence and place the bowed board so the bow was...

Can I safely do this to my trailer?? Wanting to cut some holes....

I like the welded on stake pockets. You can drop the chain hook through it then hang the hook on the top of the stake pocket. This way should the chain get slack in it for some reason, the hook will stay connected to the stake pocket.
