    Practical uses for 3d printer

I 3D print and think it is a worthwhile addition. Filament choices are much better than they used to be. Some are very tough and durable. I am working on making forming dies for my shop press, yes, the plastic is that strong! Another interesting use is to make casting forms similar to a lost...

    Riprap for retaining wall?

I'd go with the contractors advice but also include geogrid in the project. Even though you don't expect water to settle the riprap, gravity will. Gravel travels no matter what size and finding the angle of repose for the material being considered will help determine if your plans will work...

    Bank Barn style

Many great ideas in those links. I appreciate them! I never heard of them being referred to as a basement barn but it makes sense, could be a regional thing. I am replacing a small gambrel roof garage that has served me for years. It has an upper floor barn door with a beam and trolley system...

    Bank Barn style

Thanks for the links ace10 and paredown! That is exactly the kind of info that I am looking for. I will start a Bank Barn Build thread when I begin building but for now I appreciate any advice and comments.

    Bank Barn style

I am in the planning stages of my new garage/shop and am considering a 'bank barn' type of building. This style is appropriate since two sides of the ground floor will be dug into a hillside that will be backfilled to the building. Grade being to the left side and behind the garage first floor...

Clay fill for pole barn build

From my actual experience, you will have issues with freeze/thaw cycles. There are no voids in it like stone has. This allows the moisture that is in it to heave during a freeze cycle. You can not keep clay from picking up and holding moisture from its environment either. This can lead to...

    New build questions

If it's 'being constructed under an agricultural permit' and 'due to the insane costs of lumber and sheathing I am trying to reduce where I can', have you considered using ungraded lumber from a local sawmill if available? 'Residential' code requires graded lumber for structural components but...

    Budget induced hesitation

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Waiting is an option although it could work to my disadvantage if the prices continue to rise. Building construction in my area doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. If I were to do the foundation (footer, stem wall and slab), this year, would I be able to...

    Budget induced hesitation

Thanks for your response. By overstuffed I mean that my tools and machines take up so much room that I have a difficult time accomplishing the work I want to do. I have a lot of interests and am not looking to downsize any time soon. Original garage was built when funds were limited and too many...

    Budget induced hesitation

I am hoping to replace an overstuffed garage this year. At a very basic level, I have an 18x22 1 1/2 story building that needs replaced. I am able to diy the entire thing if stick built but with the price of wood products as they are, I would like to compare alternatives. Specifically, how do...

    Garage modified ARC Craftsman welder

The 'dial' is slid side to side for fine adjustment then the knob is turned clockwise pulling the movable core up jamming it in place. If you don't tighten it enough it will allow the core to slip and change amperage.

    Garage modified ARC Craftsman welder

I have one that I purchased new in the late 70's. Sits in the corner of the shop but I use it once in a while to run my twin carbon arc torch for special jobs. The only problem I had with it is the fan wore out and needed replaced.

Steel Buildings companies in MD area?

Yes, it is. I am looking to build the same type of garage. With the sidewalls at 14' I will be able to put a loft in the back about 9' up and have steps from it to an additional (second level) loft for storage above the lift in the roof trusses. Depending on your roof pitch, you will be able to...

40x40 hillside garage with mezzanine-in progress updates!

It sounds like an ideal setting for a 'bank barn' style building allowing a ground level access door to the upper floor/loft area. I am hoping to build into a hillside also but won't be comfortable without some internal buttresses or walls perpendicular to the bank wall.

    Sheathing a loft stairwell

Any drywall will be damaged easily if you are moving bulky objects to your storage. Ribbed metal panels would be my choice since wood is priced so high.
