Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

It's an interesting situation IMHO, as the flow of an opening on the end of a trunk line is noticeably higher than the same size opening on the sides of the trunk line. Yet when I think of it as a physics problem where I have a pressurized box, intuitively I expect the flow to be the same no...

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

@danski0224 , @u3b3rg33k , @AA/FC House was built with a heatpump (AC) and electric backup heat because electric utility was trying to increase usage to justify the nuke that they built, according to my neighbor, and I never checked his story. Builder went out of business according to my...

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

Upstairs is too warm in summer if the fan is set to run all the time or on "auto". I've experimented and can't really see a difference.

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

Yes basement is unfinished and could handle another trunk line. I don't know how to get new ductwork to the second floor without major surgery. Only two 2 x 6 interior walls. Exterior walls are 2 x 4. Most of the second floor registers have flex ducts, but I have no idea of how the ductwork...

That's what drove me to create this thread. Totally undersized and scrappy ductwork.

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

Good point about closing vents. The tstat is in the dining room, which is great for the half dozen times a year we entertain, but is worthless most of the time. I found that closing registers in the dining room has helped regulate temperature in the other rooms downstairs but the upstairs is...

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

If you spent some time in our bathroom to do business, let alone run a hair dryer after a shower (a hair dryer is not something that I need 😁) you might change your mind. Even though the skylight has low e glass, I think that on a sunny day you can fry an egg on the counter. The current...

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

You described my situation exactly, current equipment (single stage AC and heatpump with 2 stage hi efficiency furnace has the the capacity, you just have arctic temps downstairs in order to be comfortable upstairs. While I don't want to gut the upstairs drywall, all the different options are...

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

Interesting idea and coupled with a tstat in a room we actually use like the master bedroom would allow the upstairs to be comfortable without making the downstairs ridiculously cold.

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

I'm getting too old and creaky to DIY a second story install but I still have dreams of doing the minisplit install myself in the garage. There are many options and I want to be as well informed as possible before talking to some contractors. I'm not sure how SWBO feels about external chases...

Adding a second A/C unit to cool upstairs

Thanks for the tip. I have lots of questions about tying into the existing ductwork. Are you using the ducted mini split for both heating and cooling or just cooling. Is it only used in the master or other rooms too?
