We had a Case IH disc ripper for a few years. We could not keep it together. I spent as much time fixing it as using it! It went down the road to be someone elses problem.

Martin
For us it’s more of a rock finding issue than anything. I roll out rocks the size of semi truck tires with the chisel plow. A ripper has the ability to hook a bigger fish and tear itself apart while reeling it in. Hell I’ve dug out some 2’ diameter rocks with the Wishek disc lol

The last two gangs on the left rear wing are about to go on !!
IMG_5671.jpeg

Whatcha gonna do with all those junk blades ? Pawn the good ones off on some other sucker ? Scrap them and chalk it up to stupidity ? Stick them on a pallet and place them in the woods for the next property owner to deal with ? <- I like that one 🤣
IMG_5645.jpeg

Buckle up we’re gonna work when it’s dark out. The shop lights up nicely with the lights on. Thought it was a neat photo op.
IMG_5666.jpeg

How about I turn them into disc blade woks and sell them !? Yup. I like that option. Here are three done. I have orders already for 11 more with one even going to a GJ member in TX. That’s neat.

The temps finally rose to a point that I could give the skiddy a much needed bath. It won’t stay clean long but it looks nice for a little while !!
IMG_5673.jpeg

Enough sweet corn for 2-1/4 acres showed up. I’m pretty excited to have a larger sweet corn patch this year. The plan is to plant it here behind the house so it’s easier to get to and hopefully fewer thieving A-Holes will stop in and pick it themselves and not pay for it.
IMG_5700.jpeg

Once the disc was together Pops and I started cleaning the lean out. This is an area that I’m not proud of and am super excited to clean up.
IMG_5706.jpeg

Tires tires tires !!!!
IMG_5707.jpeg

Not bad for a morning of work. So far we’ve swept up a full wheel barrow full of bird **** and dirt off the floor.
IMG_5708.jpeg

Holy lack of bird **** there’s a floor over here !!
IMG_5709.jpeg

The next spot of fun was to dig out this pile of beams and place them on top of the pallet racking to become the floor joists for a mezzanine.
IMG_5710.jpeg

The next lawnmower will be a 3 series lol. This little guy just didn’t quite have the snort to lift it high enough.
IMG_5714.jpeg

The forklift had no issues lifting them but it was a bit interesting on the ice lol.
IMG_5715.jpeg

Beams are all set in place !! Next step will be to clean them a bit, extend them with 2x6’s and toss some decking down. I’m going to put a door from this mezzanine to the shop mezzanine so I can access it through the shop without having to climb a ladder all the time. I’ll likely put a ladder in the lean as well though.

Mama Bear and I went on a Cancun trip and she wanted to catch the sunrise the first morning we were there. These look like the pictures she took …..
IMG_5736.jpeg

And here’s the one I took. Nicely framed sunrise with the tractor and surf comber looking almost like it’s in the background. A work of art. She says “we go on vacation and all you want to do is look at tractors!?” Well yes my dear that sounds about right.
IMG_5737.jpeg

We went down as part of the Golden Harvest crew as farmer/dealers. This was the welcome party setup for us. Music and more food than anyone needed lol. It was near getting to chat with the big wigs from GH and a few corporate Syngenta employees as well. We got to meet the 2nd in command for worldwide Syngenta. That was neat. I was chatting with him and didn’t know who he was and asked him “so are you here with GH or are a farmer or dealer ?” He said “nope I’m the worldwide seed and crop protection head”. I offered to buy him a beer and he laughed.
IMG_5777.jpeg

Chairs and shades. Mama Bear was loving it.
IMG_5767.jpeg

Me not as much lol. I get antsy and jumpy when I sit around. Having no “responsibilities” beyond eating and finding a bathroom was nice for the first few days.
IMG_5768.jpeg

Piña Colada and a pork shoulder for dinner one evening. Heck yes.
IMG_5759.jpeg

After reading the news the last 24hrs I’m quite happy to be back in snow country !!
IMG_5790.jpeg

Our little people stayed with my parents and we had lunch with the whole family when we gathered them. I was put in charge of my youngest niece and we had some fun together. She kept tipping over so I gave her a box to sit in and we both got enjoyment from the bubble wrap.
IMG_5798.jpeg

Hello again wood stove !! Pops loaded it while we were gone. I’m not sure what causes these purple worm looking flames but they show up once in a while. They sure look neat.

I just got back from Puerto Morelos (20 miles south of Cancun) visiting my folks who snowbird down there- we must have just missed you! The craziness started the day we got there, and we got a message to shelter in place the first full day we were there, but it was changed to just the affected states a few hours later. No issues where we were. However my flight home was supposed to be a 4 hr direct flight, that ended up taking over 10, with a stop in DC because the customs office in providence was closed by the time we would have gotten there. I was glad to be back home in the snow when we finally got there too!

Don’t let the news scary ya back into snow country!!
We were landed before finding out **** hit the fan. Twas still glad to be back in snow country !!

A bunch of Pioneer guys are trapped down there, might pick up some business!

Martin
They made it back. Which is good I guess.

I drove by Mike's exit a couple times this weekend. It’s cold up there lol. Supposed to warm up some this week though I think. Mexico would've been nice for sure until the craziness hit.
It has been bonkers nice the last week !!

Glad to hear it all worked out !! We flew from MSP to Cancun and about the only good thing about MSP is the customs office is always open.

Miss Lily is a favorite in the barn. This one she named “Peanut” and he comes up and slobbers all over here.
IMG_5810.jpeg

I shouldn’t laugh too hard as I have a couple pets in the barn as well lol. This is Charles. He’s checking out Flat Holly. She’s our niece that send us a flat version of herself as a school project for us to take on adventures.
IMG_5814.jpeg

When we got back from loafing I set about to getting the first batch of new MiniPC’s setup for a customer to use a new terminals around their warehouse/yard.
IMG_5817.jpeg

In between clicking on things I decided to figure out why one pin on my lawnmower loader didn’t want to take grease. WTF Deere !? There isn’t an outlet hole in the center of the pin for the grease to come out of 🤨
IMG_5829.jpeg

Twas an easy fix. I’m gonna send my sales guy Kevin a bill for my time. I don’t bill a very high labor rate but I work reaaalllllllllly slow so it’s still gonna be $1,200.
IMG_5828.jpeg

That looks better. No one likes a dry pin.

Strange that it past quality control with no hole. Guess they didn't grease it or the robot doesn't measure the amount of grease that went in before hitting a PSI or some type of measurement sensor to determine its properly greased.
Sales guy offered me a new pin when I showed him the pictures. I said “sure but only if it comes with a brand new 3046r wrapped around it!!”

We’ll see.

Getting after some wood cutting !!
IMG_5834.jpeg

The piled wood was too long to be on the bucking table nicely so I decided to try cutting off the pile like in the olden days.
IMG_5836.jpeg

The next day Pops and I set the table and trailer up to cut up the stuff that a trees service guy dropped off this winter.
IMG_5843.jpeg

Decent sized load of splitters and two totes of smalls.
IMG_5845.jpeg

All the cool kids take pictures of their saws on the back of their wood trailers so I figured I’d give it a shot !!
IMG_5846.jpeg

The chunks aren’t that big, it’s just a small saw 😂
IMG_5863.jpeg

I noodles the biggest ones into pieces small enough to handle onto the splitter. All in all we ended with 12.5 totes of wood of about 1/4 of what I need for next year. Hell yeah.

Hey hey hey !! I had arthroscopic carpel tunnel surgery done on my left hand yesterday. Drove 3.5hrs to get it done arthroscopicly instead of the traditional open style. Supposed to be back at it in a few days instead of multiple weeks of downtime recovering from stitches and having my palm cut open. Next one is scheduled for a few weeks from now.

4 days in and I’m almost back to 100%. A little soreness remains in my palm but not much. I’m doing chores again and most things like usual. Lifting heavy stuff puts a bit of strain on things but it doesn’t hurt so away we go !! No restrictions like with the other open style. Go for it and if it hurts back off.

All that remains is this little white strip covering a small incision.

WOW that is an amazing result!
I’m quite happy so far. Never thought I’d be able to do this less than a week after surgery.
IMG_5908.jpeg

Got to love the advancement in medical technologies. Just a shame it cost so much without insurance!
I asked what it cost if I wanted to leave a fat roll of Benjammins and he said “$6500 and we won’t turn it in to insurance”.

My insurance company is gonna pick it up almost completely (or so they say). Even if I end up paying for it all it’s well worth it. My left hand hasn’t been numb for almost a week now. I kinda like that.

It’s been a spendy week on the ranch !! Got myself a new EAVision J150 spray drone and a Winco 22kw generator.
IMG_5894.jpeg

Also purchased 59 307lb calves.
IMG_5905.jpeg

The littles helped me adjust the feed rail so the calves wouldn’t sneak under. I built it to be adjustable and have never adjusted it so it’s good to see that it still moves after sitting in the same place for 10yrs !!
IMG_5907.jpeg

Also acquired a few G5 Turret Pro cams. They’re a whole lot smaller than I thought they’d be. I’m excited to get them up and running.

What's the weight capacity for the drone? Any clip points on the drone for a harness?
No particular reason, just curious.... ;) :ROFLMAO:
It’ll carry around 200lbs in “delivery mode” so at least my fatass won’t be able to hang from it lol. It’s got a 20gal spray tank and a 180lb capacity dry spreader.

I could bring all three kids to school with it though …..

What did you have to give for those Holstein calves? I have seen bottle calves going for $1,500 around here.

I am not buying any bottle calves this year . . . . .

Martin
$6.10/lb or $1,875/ea. Guys that have high livability can still afford to pay $1,500 for a bottle calf. There is still profit to be made, not a lot but some for sure.

So what was more expensive, the drone or the cows?

There's lots of drones showing up around here but I think they are finding the limits of them. They started out charging really cheap rates, now they are more than ground rigs.
Calves by well more than double :lol_hitti

Calves were 307lbs average at $6.10/lb and I purchased 59. I wanted 80 to completely fill two pens but came home short. I'll fill the pen up next month so no worries there.

Drone was $40,495 with three batteries, controller and the drone itself. It's an EAVision J150.

Winco 22kw drone spec generator was $7,400.

I still need to buy the dry spreader for the drone. That'll be another $3,000 this summer sometime.

And then a tender rig of some kind. Debating on cobbling a few IBC totes together for this year and building a flight deck trailer over winter for next year. Gotta see how it all works first before I go down a tender route. This year is gonna be a **** show without one but it's okay lol

The drone is awesome! What kind of run time and range on a battery? I guess 22kw is needed to charge 2 batteries for no down time.
Range and flight time will depend on payload and ferry distances. If it’s isn’t flying real far before it starts to spray it’ll empty its entire 20gal tank before the battery is low.

The charger pulls 51a and puts out 12,500w to the battery when it’s charging. It charges one at a time. The generator is oversized with the intent of being able to use it to power an automixing station as well as a few electric pumps, lights and anything else I may need.

The battery should easily be charged and ready to go in the time it takes the drone to fly a cycle. Typical flight time is around that 7-10 minutes between fills and battery swaps.

I’ll be posting all kinds of stuff about this once I learn more and get some hands on experience.

First things first though. I gotta get my Commercial Applicators License as well as my drone pilots license and a heavyweight exemption because it’ll be over 55lbs. And a Class 3 medical so I can fly in the dark.

I won’t mind studying and a lot of it is review at least as far as the core commercial tests as I have a private applicators license already. The aerial and a few others will be all new stuff.

Martin, the first bottle calf I witnessed sell for $750, my mind was blown 🤯...40lb calf that might die tomorrow...WTF!?
It really wasn’t that long ago I was buying 400lb feeders for $400. Now 300lb feeders are $1,875. I have around $900 in each animal to get it from 300lbs to 1550lbs and can contract them for $2.125/lb. That’s still over $500/hd profit which is bonkers with what is historically “normal”. The thing is now though that I have $110,000 ******* in those two pens for 12-13 months. That’s around a 15% return which isn’t bad for farming. On the other hand I could have stuck that money in a few mutual funds I already have money in and have gotten the same return with zero work lol.

Seed shed cams going up !! Exterior cam that’ll look at the shop entrance as well as a NanoStation M2 Loco that is almost 12yrs old. It was in a bucket of old things and it powered up so we shall see if it works !!

Interior cam 1. Ubiquiti G5 Turret Pro.

Interior cam 2. Ubiquiti G5 Dome Ultra. Younger Mike ordered two of these by mistake. He was supposed to order more Turret cams as they’re weather rated. Oops.

So what's your plans with this drone? Spreading and spraying your own ground?

I still can't quite comprehend how they are charging those batteries so fast without running into problems. I guess I'm just used to older batteries.
For now spraying and spreading on my own acres. It makes sense financially to keep tires off the ground anytime possible. From compaction and rutting to actually smashing the crop when driving in it everything adds up as a loss. I figure it’ll cost around $5/a to run the drone over the ground so I don’t have to recover much lost crop to pay for that.

I have no idea how the batteries charge that fast other than that they do lol. Lots of juice charging lots of little packs in a big one I guess.

I think this has turnt into my favorite camera on property. All four new cams, new AP, new UNVR Instant and 12yr old NanoLocoM2 are up and running !!
IMG_5925.png

Night vision on these Turret cams is pretty stellar. Snowmageddon is currently underway. Just gotta wait it out until next Saturday when it’s supposed to be 65f here. That snow won’t feel so cocky then !!

Chicken barn was emptied last night. Best day of the flock lol. Gonna have a few real busy days coming up. Today I gotta run to town and pickup training manuals for my Commercial Pesticide Applicators License so I can study up for that test. I need the core test, aerial, field crops and right of way to be able to legally use the drone. Also need to find some MNDot employee that knows what I need to do with them to make them happy. Then a “hunny please as long as you’re in town” list or two. Then find some distilled water for my sleep machine. Then stop at the FSA office to file a new lease contract. Then stop at the NRCS office to ask some cover crop questions. Then stop at Pizza Ranch because it’s next to the NRCS office and it’d be rude to just walk by. Then off to Harbor Freight to look at/buy a water pump. Then come home and start cleaning the chicken barn. Tomorrow finish cleaning the chicken barn. Thursday drive 3.5hrs one way to get my right hand prodded to stop the numbness. Friday morning recover a bit. Friday afternoon start sorting seed corn. It’s gonna be a busy one !!
