I went out into the garage and pulled it out.
No brand
'CHROME VANADIUM' (so reasonable to assume late-production Asian)
2-1/8" tall
has a 1/2" square female drive opening in the center (with detent divots)
one end is 17mm 6 pt
other end is 19mm 6 pt

two sockets in one at the expense of clearance.

wonder if it'll take lug nuts off of a Ford Ranger?

Had fun sifting through a few tools at a local sale. All tools a $1 a piece. Left a couple nice full polish wrenches I forgot to add to the keep pile. Proto Anti Slip, Professional, and Proto 500 series wrenches

Anyone happen to recognize these crimping pliers / cutters? I believe these would technically be multi-function linesman pliers. I cannot make sense of the remnants of the etched letters. It's certainly a quality US made professional tool. Maybe Ideal or Crescent? I have not seen this exact style. Other players I can think of would be Thomas & Betts and Klein.

Edit: Solved. These are the Ideal 30-425 pliers. From my research this model was discontinued in 2014. Now in their senior years these 40+ yr old pliers are reduced to cutting twigs.

I’m sorry - I didn’t mean to imply this construction in my first post by using the word “socket”.

two sockets in one at the expense of clearance.
You mean around the wider end? Or do you mean reach (I’d think an extension solves that)?

19mm? Probably. I’m too tired (or lazy) to check mine right now.

no no.. MINE is a 19mm x 17mm - the lug nuts on the Ranger are 19mm, but I use a deep-well.

your specimen above and this widget are the first time I've seen this approach used

(difficult to make out the 1/2" square broach - barely visible in second image here)

19MM for lug nuts makes sense; maybe the 17 for the oil pan plug? Many of those are 17?

Both of yours are non-impact which is new/strange to me.

So the local tool library's donations have turned up another oddity.
PXL_20260813_043928399.jpg
(The square and wrench aren't part of it, they're just holding down some extremely old and stiff fabric/leather for the picture.)

I think it's a jack of some kind? I will know more when I run the ragged paper that came with it through a translator. I know it's Soviet, because both the paper and the back of the widget on the right have the state quality mark of the USSR on them. (The widget was in the pocket in the little pale plastic case from the first picture.)
PXL_20260813_044126202~2.jpg

Also, while I was there, I spotted what I thought was an open socket box in the bin and picked it up so everything wouldn't spill out. Turned out to be an S-K Tools metric hex bit set (19727, bottom of the page); not very old, but by the 1986 catalog the inside lid had a different logo, so it was at least oh holy hell how is 1986 forty years ago did some jackass leave the calendar running again.

Anyway. The tray was missing, but all seven sockets were there, so I taped the box shut and listed the contents on the outside, and left it next to the three Snap-On SAE hex bits someone had also stored in there. A person who is not me will end up with it. (Sorry, no pictures; I was in a hurry and it has been a very long three weeks during which we have mostly not had a working kitchen. I cannot wait for my coworkers to take a vacation.)

I would say yes - automobile jack.
The paper "list" is the contents list for that particular kit. (example below)
I'm guessing the little round widget is a tire pressure gauge. ("one atmosphere, two atmospheres, three atmospheres....")
leather straps and buckles put it back a ways. These examples below most likely date from the 1970s, possibly 1980s. Third image shows a date of 1975, by which time they were stitching up fancy "Naugahyde" pouches:

Just bought this Snap On tap and die set for $50 from a seller I bought from a couple months back. I was short of cash and time so I had left it behind but didn't forget about it. Lucky I messaged him as today as it was nearly listed on Markeplace for more and it being his final days before moving.

Alcohol should remove that owners name from the top. 90% ISP or denatured is best.

Yep and fortunately none of the contents are etched like some of the other tools I bought from them. Owner engraved tools are a big turnoff for me in a lot of cases. It's so barbaric.

I used to have 70s era Fiats that used a screw top jack like that, where an arm swung up from the side, and stuck into a square tube under the body pan. No frame on those cars, just square tube close to the wheels (under the door in front on a 2D, but cleared in the back) on each side. Stupid things always terrified me, but never had to use it on the side of the road, so never disappointed.

Stock VWs--Types 1-3 (maybe others, too)--used similar. Very spindly and scary with a three-ton, fully loaded Vanagon up there.

Here's the stock jack for my '90 Vanagon:

with some other tools that came with the rig.

Imagine using that jack on gravel or dirt. GVWR of a Vanagon is between ~5,200 and 5,800 lb, depending on trim. It's easy to load them beyond that.

Made up a bag of misc "dirty but good" screwdrivers from a big tub at a yard sale. Got a few Whia 1000v insulated, some Klein, and some Xcelite (even a beryllium driver). $0.25 ea (sorry for the **** pic) A little crusty, but no engravings, they'll clean up nice.

Took a gamble on some speakers that were left out in the rain with "free" on them. The cabinets were wrecked, but there were a couple nice alnico woofers and horns to be salvaged in there:
20260814_183356.jpg
20260814_184803.jpg
Got a nice mop, mop bucket/wringer, extra (new) mop head, and floor scrubber for $18
20260814_185426.jpg
And finally, I spotted this desk with metal locker drawers:
20260814_183027.jpg
I bought it for $25, because it has nice ball-bearing slides on the drawers, and I thought it could be a nice bandsaw/drillpress table (saws on top, bits/blades in the drawers). I looked it up, apparently its a "teen 'locker' desk" from Pottery Barn, and it was $1299! Good lord. Even used they still sell for decent money. I may just have to flip it, lol. It's supposed to have casters (missing), but it's pretty nice. I almost hate to make a workbench out of it. I dunno, we'll see.

I also picked up two Snap-on spark plug sockets for $1 each. I forgot to take a pic of them.

Today's massive haul:

55464683846_4f76ee2a85_b.jpg

I was picking up tools, inspecting them, then setting them back down again. Proprietor got curious about why I wasn't taking more of the $1/lb tools and I explained that I try not to buy tools unless I'll actually use them. Then I came to the box of 3/8" dr. deep sockets. Someone nicely spattered lime-green paint on the metrics, making it much easier to pick them out. Double on the 14mm--I was certain there was a 13 in there (might have rolled off the seat in the rig)--missing 12 and, of course, 10. But there are 16 and 18mm! Anything smaller than 10, really, is 1/4" realm in my book. Mostly just branded Taiwan, but the taller 14 is a Benchtop--also MI Taiwan.

$2.

I also picked a couple of very interesting offset FORD combo wrenches--then was informed those had already been purchased. Damn. Big car show in town tomorrow and I bet I could have made some good trades with those.

The other day I hit a distant but good Restore, and found a few things:
55465082860_f41cf06a17_b.jpg
long Xcelite 1/4" driver, S-K ratchet (can't pass them up when they are a buck!), metric ball driver, Marshal Wells/Northern King adjustable, Snap-on 7/8" G code, two Williams midget wrenches. $7

And today I hit four Estate sales, and only found two things: a pair of Kleins (still in truck) and this
55463707147_9e3d7b559b_b.jpg
Missing two drawers, I almost passed on it, but then I realized that the price wasn't $75, but $15, so it was quickly put in my truck. And now I need to get it out before my Sunday chores (picking up new patio furniture) and as this is 100% steel, it is a heavy sumbuck.

So, today on my way to the ever present dog park (sense a theme in my life?) I checked to see if any good sales that have popped up, and low and behold, my favorite low-end estate sale company was on day two of a small sale, and there was some interesting stuff in the pictures (this company never puts "tools" in the ad, so I miss it sometimes)
55466219199_d6d4722c21_b.jpg
Combo square w/ vintage Stanley blade, almost compete set of auto wrenches, Herbrand tappet, SK Wayne combo + DBE's, leather punch, Mossberg adjustable, and an odd little unmarked obstruction wrench. All of that, plus this
55466045876_66724639c5_b.jpg
a Sawzall with blades, for $20. I love bargain day!

Estate sale: ($65): Unicorn Strings bowed psaltery; Leupold GX-2i3 golf rangefinder (NIB); Columbian vise 6CD; Sony ED2 mini-stereo; Snap On general service set.
Must admit the bowed psaltery isn't my favorite instrument. The vise I actually picked up at the end of a different estate sale, which when asked on price was free if I could get it unbolted from the bench... multi-tool never let's you down. Surprised to find the Snap On. Probably because there was almost no tools at the sale. The estate sale guy didn't even give it a second look and lumped it in with the rest of my stuff.
