Craftsman 24967 ratchet

Bought a bunch of **** from a Vo-Tech this week. Actually, got a lot of REALLY nice stuff, but came with the usual load of **** that one must sort through.
Got two REALLY nice SK swivel head ratchets, full set of Snap-on metric deep sockets 9-19, a set of Craftsman 3/8 drive thin wall deep sockets and a very nice 1/2" Dewalt impact wrench, barely used.... but i digress.

The ratchet on top I have owned for quite some time. KZ-44995. I find myself reaching for this over the other 3/8 ratchets in my boxes. Very comfortable, and as you can see, the only thing that even shows wear is the selector lever. Not one chip or peel in the chrome.

My questions are on the other one. 24967 L-AD. I did a search and can't find much info. I found a couple for sale on ebay. They have the same number, but the letter code following the number is different.

I suspect the letter code is a date code. Is that correct? Also, as you can see, the quick release button and mechanism is missing. Is there a repair kit available? If so, what part number am I looking for?

I suspect the guts on these are interchangeable between the two bodies. Can anyone verify?

Lastly, can anyone date either or both of these ratchets?

Looking on ebay it seems Craftsman 2885 rebuild kit is the one for the 24967. One listing says it can work with your other ratchet, but one is coarse and one is fine. Don't recall seeing the 24967 style ratchet before.

The black ratchet was part of their spline drive socket set. Not sure if parts are interchangeable. The other is USA made and that one is imported.

That USA made paintbrush handle ratchet is actually really nice. Wish I had one!

I highly doubt the mechanisms are interchangeable.

24967 “L” is the plant in China and “AD” is a date code, 2014 to be exact.

Your “KZ” ratchet is a 2010 date code. KAA or AA is 2011, AB is 2012, AC is 2013 and so on.

Makes perfect sense. I suspected it was off shore as no "usa" anywhere on it.

Coming with the spline drive set would explain why there are so few of them out there.

Was thinking I owned it longer than that, and it wasn't new when I got it. But then, it is always possible I am not remembering correctly. It is the most comfortable ratchet I own.

So, is "K" the code for the forging plant? If so, do we know which one?

I tried to find a comprehensive chart on Craftsman tools manufacturing codes. Limited info, as Sears did not publish that info, and it must be gleaned from external sources.

Just FYI, yes, the guts interchange. Because they are different tooth count, of course you need to use both the gear and the anvil.

Here are two pic with the China made ratchet sporting the guts from the USA made ratchet. For some reason, the USA made one switches from on to off more easily than the Chinese model. Go figure.

Would not have guessed that. Interesting nonetheless.

You did not change the directional switch, so that could account for the difference you noted.

The black ratchet uses a 72 tooth ratchet repair kit.

Bumping an old thread, can/will add a photo when I can snap one in daylight tomorrow. Curious if anyone has any knowledge on price of a 153 piece universal craftsman kit. LNIB, was bought and stored away over a decade ago and forgotten about until this past weekend.

Similar to the set @d.mcfarland posted, but larger. Just like this one from reddit.

I'll get a pic in good sunlight tomorrow, trying to determine value for a sale as the property it was at is being majorly thinned out and this was re-found in the cleaning.

Here is the aforementioned set, next to a same count piece (153) mechanics set of the same era.
I remember buying this red set, and putting it in the shed at my parents property, thinking it would be a good set out away from my main box. In over a decade, it may have been used once.
I am in the process of cleaning out that property and considering selling this red set. Wasn’t sure if anybody had thought thoughts on a good price. eBay has not been much help.
