    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT Old barn - New life

Well into the second week of vacation. Summer is time for family visits, the house has been crowded for a while. Really nice, although the project gets less attention. But things have happened. Final concrete work is done except the plastering. Trusses are positioned and secured, gable wall...

Thanks. 3 days should normally be enough. The trusses doesn’t add much weight, so the downward force isn’t much of an issue. It’s more about moving and shifting loads on top of the fresh concrete. But looking at my calendar for next week, it probably will have more than enough time to set...

The trusses arrived today as planned. Fortunately it was ready to land them on the wall directly, although there is still a day or two before the walls are finished. The final row is draining. The blocks are u-shaped, so that a continuous reinforced concrete layer finishes the wall structure...

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT Old barn - New life

Good question. There is a gap between the old and new structure. But the two will be connected at some point. I first need to stabilize the old foundations, then adjust the height of the old structure to align with the new. The side purlin (I think it’s called, marked red on the picture) is...

Good idea! I found some pictures taken from the same side. Not the exact same spot, but it worked out OK. I’ll try to follow up and take a picture on this spot whenever something happens.

Thank You. Laying blocks is a bit like building Lego. Only heavier.

Some more rows this weekend. Only one more to go at the front wall now. But a lot of work remaining on the other side, over the gate. I’m starting to think a steel beam here maybe would be better. But so far sticking to the original plan of casting a concrete beam.

Even if it’s a bit boring just showing a wall growing in height.. Anyway, here’s an update of today’ status. Almost 7 rows now, 5 to go. Other news: Bought a larger concrete mixer yesterday. I’ve only used a handheld mixer so far, too slow and tiring. Also got a rolling scaffold to get me...

I bought a couple of windows last week. Haven’t picked them up yet, but they seem to be ok. Some TLC and new glass, and they will fit the barn perfectly. They’ve been installed in a similar barn from the 1920’s.

The drawing is accurate. I think maybe the perspective in the picture is a bit deceiving. The new section is 6,8 x 5m. Including the existing part the total will be 6,8 x 12,5m, 85m2 (914sq ft). Stage 2 as originally planned, not shown in this drawing, adds an additional 4 meters length that...

One layer at a time. 4 down, 8 to go. The last ones will be slow.. I’m planning to use some of the old floorboards for doors. Massive and heavy materials that will look gorgeous. I think that will be a nice way to reclaim them. Not sure about the color, though, I need to see how the wood looks...

You can now see the outline of how this part of the barn will be. Soon it will reach over 3 meters ceiling height, large barndoor in the back and a smaller door to the house. I’m leaving a 4 meter opening inside towards the existing part. It will be closed off with sliding doors, so I can...

Recieved some 14 pallets of stone and mortar today. Soon it will rise from the ground in hopefully straight and ordered manner.

It’s so satisfying to remove the formwork. Can’t wait to get on with the walls.

Milestone reached today. All went smoothly and as planned. 16 tons of concrete is now firmly in place and not going anywhere for the next 100 years.

Thank You. The vertical siding on the gable end is not representable. When I dismantled part of the barn for the new section, I just moved the siding and made a preliminary gable end to close the building. I need to do the project in two stages for logistic reasons. The boards are not in a good...

New milestone to be reached this weekend. Insulation, vapor barrier and rebar is finished. On friday the concrete will be poured. If all goes well, I can remove the formwork after a couple of days, then 3-4 weeks pause before the next step.

April is here, still cold nights but comfortable day temperatures. Days are longer, and snow is almost gone (careful not to say that too loud). This weekend finally saw some progress.

Winter has not yet arrived, but now on serious overtime. By the end of this week the first snow will cover every ambition of progress in this project for the next 5 months. So I was happy to see the ground well prepared this week. 70 cm of dirt removed, replaced with stone and gravel to a firm...
