I ordered an 8". It's a whole lot of vise for $99. And I can beat on it without feeling too guilty.

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

This is what I ended up doing. Pressure switch unloader for the low pressure side, and a Load Genie check valve unloader for the high pressure side. I've now found enough photos of early 80s IR compressors with no unloader setup to determine that they did build them that way for a time. Also...

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

You have something inline in your unloader piping to isolate the low and high pressure cylinders?

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

Yeah, that manual shows the centrifugal unloader... which, as you can see in my photos, my pump doesn't have any provision for. The boss on the crankcase cover where the valve would go was never machined.

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

This is my compressor. Built in 1982. Blanked-out unloader ports in the heads and crankcase cover that were never machined. The line in the last photo is what I'd initially assumed was an unloader, but it's just a crankcase vent. Check valve and relief valve for the tank feed line. I...

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

My pump does not have a centrifugal unloader. They were made both ways. The pumps without the centrifugal unit seems to be newer. Too dark to get photos now, but I'll get some tomorrow.

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

I agree. It's just strange that there are no signs it ever had one. No ports in the heads, piping, ect. The photo is not of mine, just a similar one I pulled from the internet. If anyone here has a T30 and could post a photo of where the unloader line ties in, that would be helpful. The...

    I-R 242-5N T30 compressor unloader valve

I have a 1980s Ingersoll-Rand T30 compressor, with a 242-5N pump and a 5hp single phase motor, that I just put into service. It starts hard, so I thought maybe the unloader valve wasn't working. Turns out, it doesn't have an unloader valve. No centrifugal unit, no needle valve in the pressure...

The R series was a total redesign. Several refinements vs. Reed's older production.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I've never seen an "anvil vise", ie. shaped like an anvil, that wasn't an economy tool primarily marketed toward thrifty farmers, mechanics, and home users. They would have been advertised on afternoon television, if television had existed.

I don't have a 4C to check, but the swivel bolt in my Reed 406 was an oddball 1" x 12 TPI with an oversize shoulder. I ended up making one.

I disagree. I don't see anything on this vise that couldn't be machined out of solid stock. Casting only the slide portion of the dynamic jaw would make little sense. First, if one was going to all the trouble of making a foundry pattern, why not make the entire dynamic jaw and slide as one...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Odd that it weighs so little for the width of the jaws. Most 8" vises of that era are close to 300 lbs. Perhaps it was designed for general shop work, rather than " heavy chipping" cold chisel work that most were intended for. Very interesting vise. Other than the beaten up jaw supports, it...
