    New toolbox must haves

I think another factor is whether or not you need to close up everything and lock your box at the end of the day. I don’t like having to store power tool chargers and power tools in my box, but if I’m in a shop where I need to lock it up at night my box layout will need to reflect that. Things...

    New toolbox must haves

I think it largely depends on what kind of work you're doing and what tools you need to store. Machinists have different needs than HD equipment mechanics and so on. I feel like no matter what work I am doing, I will want a drawer for sockets. To that end, I like the deep, wide drawer that...

Replacement Drawer Labels for Vidmar Cabinets?

Really? No one has ever bought replacement handle labels or parts here? Huh. I'm surprised.

Welding aluminium for first time ever and its popping like tiny firecracker

Pure tungsten won't run correctly on an inverter. It would stutter and have an unstable arc. If you don't have the knowledge that pure tungsten was meant for transformer rectifier machines and attempted to use it on an inverter you might not know that causes problems with the arc. But I do...

Snap On KR 1000 Tool Box (The Tank)

I sold mine a few years back when I got my KRL 1023 and I kinda wish I hadn't. I loved that box, the KR1000 is an absolute beast. I had a 1/2" thick steel top mounted to mine and I'd pick the whole thing up with a forklift and move it around the plant. Heavy duty boxes for sure.

Replacement Drawer Labels for Vidmar Cabinets?

What do you guys like for replacement labels and clear plastic covers for the drawers on a Vidmar cabinet? I have about 4 cabinets that need the drawers re-labeled, the ones that are currently on them are cracked, old, and just not very nice. In the past I have just printed out paper labels...

    Need help sourcing bandsaw blade

This is the way. Most blade welders are tricky to use on bi-metal blades, due to the difference in materials within the blade. Silver soldering doesn't melt the blade steel, so it doesn't require as fussy of heat treatment/annealing. I made a little jig to align the blade spine, grind an...

Welding aluminium for first time ever and its popping like tiny firecracker

Un-weldable aluminum alloys puddle clean, they just crack immediately. If it is a die cast part, it can contain large amounts of zinc, which will pop and spit, which could be a thing, but heavy contamination from whatever is coating that part will do that too. It looks like a piece of...

Welding aluminium for first time ever and its popping like tiny firecracker

Look at those pictures again. There is no evidence of a grinder/sander being used. Barely any scratch marks from a wire brush. This is random bits of aluminum, highly, highly unlikely it is mag. And yeah, mag welds like dirty aluminum, but this IS dirty aluminum. It's black and grey...

Welding aluminium for first time ever and its popping like tiny firecracker

You guys are hearing hoofbeats and thinking zebras instead of horses. His metal is VERY dirty. That will cause all of the issues shown in that puddle. If he still has shielding issues on bright, clean, new metal, then you can start looking for hose leaks. When troubleshooting a problem...

    Kennedy Kits Discontinued

According to a quick google, ball bearing drawer slides weren't really a thing until the late 80's for toolboxes, and even then it was limited to the higher end boxes. It seems up until the last 20 years or so friction slides were the norm. Not sure what took toolbox makers so long to change...

    Kennedy Kits Discontinued

Yeah the old roller cabs with friction slides are trash. The top boxes had small enough drawers that the friction slides weren’t a problem, but it was way too easy to overload the roll cab drawers.

    Kennedy Kits Discontinued

One of the things that always frustrated me about Kennedy boxes is how people used them for things they weren’t intended for and then complained when they didn’t hold up. They are not supposed to hold tooling. They are meant to hold *precision hand tools*. Taps, tool bits, cutters, inserts...

Welding aluminium for first time ever and its popping like tiny firecracker

That aluminum is very dirty, likely coated. All the soot, smoke and other funky colors are from the aluminum burning off those contaminants and messing with your shielding. Grind the metal clean to bare material with a fiber disc or flap wheel and that will help considerably. Run 2%...

Teaching a New Welder - What Do You Wish You Had Been Shown?

In due time. She did specifically ask for practice and education in MIG welding, as that is what her next class is next semester. When she feels confident and comfortable with MIG we can move on to other processes, but it will take us a few weeks to get through MIG welding 101.

Teaching a New Welder - What Do You Wish You Had Been Shown?

The first lesson went quite well! Thanks again for everyone's input. We spent a few minutes going over how wire welding works, how to set the machine up, when to use what kind of gas and why, and general theory. I had sheared up a box of coupons, and then we spent a few hours doing some...

Teaching a New Welder - What Do You Wish You Had Been Shown?

Thanks for the input guys. Our first lesson is tomorrow, we will get a better idea of what she's looking to achieve with me when we actually sit down in the shop and start working. Hopefully we can get her where she wants to be in time for school to start in a few months.

Milwaukee M12 Cut Off Tool - Sheet Metal Frustration

I have that exact cutoff tool. What battery are you using with it? If you aren't using the High Output batteries it will stall very easily, but the HO batteries will give it a lot more grunt. That said, that really isn't the tool to just cut sheet metal rectangles. You want a shear. If you...
