Trouble shooting A/C condenser, blown fuse

We had a storm that caused the power to go on and off several times. The outages ranged between flickers to 20 seconds or so. This caused the 30 year old A/C condenser fan motor to fail. I couldn’t get an exact replacement for the 1/4 hp, 230V, 1625 rpm unit , but I found a 1/3 hp unit with...

Using bicycle parts to build something?

Has anyone seen or heard of using the components of a multi-speed bike chain drive for something other than an bike? I'm just curious. Seems like a pretty solid technology that is readily available for next to nothing in the form of used bikes. The older steel frame 10 speed bikes are pretty...

    Telescoping tube clamps?

I'm trying to repair a photography light stand that has telescoping aluminum tubes. The aluminum tubes ODs are 35mm, 30mm, 25mm, 20mm. The wall thickness is about 1.25mm. Some of the original clamps are stripped, others are broken. I'd like to save the stand if I can. But I can buy a new one...

Old style LP gas tank uses

I've got a couple of the old non-safety-valve 20lbs LP gas tanks. They are in really good condition, but are illegal to fill with gas these days. I was thinking about converting one to use as a portable air tank. Has anyone done this. I thought I'd just spin the old valve off and fit it with...

    Laser Etched Socket Markings

I thought these seemed like a good idea, since they do seem easier to see/read. I saws some Craftsman sockets that ONLY had laser etching, and now I'm thinking its a bad idea. Isn't there a chance that could wear off? There must be a thread about this, but I didn't see one.
