let's see your craftsman block grinders

Looks like another 1/2 hp just came up for sale on CL. For the condition $120 is too rich for my blood but someone who likes to haggle might get a good deal. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/tls/4549360431.html (Insert catchy saying here)

let's see your craftsman block grinders

Quick alert to any blockheads in chicago. There's a grinder available out in the suburbs. They are asking too much and it comes with other stuff but they obviously want it gone so somebody might get a deal. http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/tls/4531318676.html Also if someone needs me to pick...

Does tool selection compound the complexity of the job?

I don't know that the availability of tools makes my projects more complex so much as it makes me willing to take on more complex jobs. Of course I'm a compulsive list maker so I break down most jobs well before I start them and I'll have a pretty good idea where to cut the fat. My problems...

Craftsman Block Grinder - Deal or No Deal

You can pay that much for a grinder/stand/light at HF but it won't be nearly as cool. (Insert catchy saying here)

    intentionally aging wood?

Good catch, most red oak species don't have the same tannin levels so yes they would be less likely to take on that pleasant aged brown and more likely to have a greenish cast. (Insert catchy saying here)

    intentionally aging wood?

For oak you can fume it with strong ammonia (I think ace sells the good stuff) and it will darken it with pretty much the same chemical changes as natural aging. It's a trick that furniture makers have been using since the craftsman movement began. (Insert catchy saying here)

Found a deal on craigslist? - List Here!

Here's an old parks planer. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/tls/4483935099.html 100 is probably a fair price for one that needs parts, but if it's mechanically sound someone is going to get a nice planer project. (Insert catchy saying here)

Found a deal on craigslist? - List Here!

Indiana/Illinois woodworkers, check this one out. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/tls/4472125346.html It's a panel saw sans the saw. For $100 and a circular saw you can have a pretty nice setup. I'd get it myself but just don't have the time right now. (Insert catchy saying here)

    Snapon or Craftsman?

This should be etched in stone somewhere. A couple of good breaker bars (I'm kinda partial to proto) some impact extensions and impact sockets (pittsburg are fine to start with) will carry you a long way. I used cheapo ratchets until had the money for better stuff but I never busted a knuckle...

Old Craftsman Planer or New Dewalt?????? Which one???

Dunno if I would go so far as to say "joke" but yes it's a hobby machine for people doing jobs where throughput isn't important. I'll agree that any current dewalt planer will outpace it very quickly even if it doesn't exactly get you there in style. (Insert catchy saying here)

Old Craftsman Planer or New Dewalt?????? Which one???

Yeah, they have gone up a bit but I think 300 is a tad high. Now 300 for a parks and I would be say fire up the truck and screw the speed limit. (Insert catchy saying here)

Old Craftsman Planer or New Dewalt?????? Which one???

Just bought an alien head myself but haven't had a chance to set it up. Cost me 135 delivered but will probably be 200 by the time I put a decent sized motor under it. The vintage stuff is fun to work with but chances are you will need to do some fiddling. If you need to meet a timeline...

Ok Chi-town, someone please grab this because I have a terrible time resisting $10 vintage power tools. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/atq/4443700767.html It's a Double A Products builders saw w/ a craftsman badge. They were made to be used as a a table saw or a radial arm saw. I would...

    Aluminum or pot metal?

It may sound weird but 'listen' to it. Most Al parts have a much cleaner ring to them than their die cast counterparts. Either that or I've spent a few too many hours on the shop floor and my ears are ringing. (Insert catchy saying here)

What's on your walls? Neat storage ideas!

Looks nice! I bet you could put a tee nut and a thumbscrew in the insert to hold it still if you ever had an accessory that tended to pull out. On a tangential subject, how did you do the logos? (Insert catchy saying here)

I don't know what these normally go for but this is a neat old grease pump. Might be a good addition to someone's vintage garage . http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/atq/4420807041.html (Insert catchy saying here)

You and me both. He wasn't really that worried about the money though, he was just finding a home for it. Very nice guy. The brake isn't instant. It just gives you rapid deceleration. To my mind it's mostly so you don't have a spinning grinder nearby when you move on to the next task...
