Just got a quote for a detached addition

Came in at $50/sq ft for a 2 car addition to a 3 car garage (detached). I think I am comfortable with that, leaving as studs/bare inside, but could possibly get drywall installed/hung, if I bought the materials. Is this a fair deal overall, or negotiate further? It's in a major metro area, so...

In the doghouse, I think it's time to add-on a bay:

So I brought home another car and while I left it in the driveway last night, after my wife left for dinner, I washed it and then parked in the garage. In "her" spot. She came home, and was not impressed.:shocking: Anyways, she was a good sport and let me build a garage many years ago, and when...

Absolutely AMAZED at how fans helped control moisture in the garage!

So the attached garage is always fine, and no surprise due to the heat which radiates from the house. But the detached garage is another story. So it was in the 60s today, up from wet and rainy in the 30s all week before. Anyways, garage felt moist. It was VERY, VERY Humid today! Putting two...

What are typical installation costs of lifts?

For a 4 post lift, what are typical costs in a metropolitan area to install? :dunno: Any "discount" for multiple lifts installed during the same visit? Inclusive of all needed materials, including hydraulic fluids? Thank you for your input

38"-39.5" Drip Pans for a 4 post lift, what might you have/use?

Bought the Backyard Buddy brand 4 post lift, but didn't buy their drip pans - they didn't seem to offer much cover. What do you use for drip catches on your 4 post lift? I've looked at the metal trays from Advance Auto (but they are only 36" wide). I've also considered the plastic drip trays...

Grabbed an old 10 drawer IBM card cabinet for tool storage...

Awesome roller bearings, 10 drawers, divided down the center, and FREE!!! Probably weighed 400 lbs, total. Each drawer weighed 28 lbs. Might buy a paint gun and use some automotive paint to refinish

Anyone ever seen engineered attic trusses w/ hip roof?

Let's say the garage is 34x42 w/ a hip roof. Anyone seen "attic trusses" (I think I have this term right( w/ a hip roof? I have seen them w/ a typical gable end roof, but cannot seem to find them w/ a hip style roof. I imagine where w/ a gable end roof, the attic "room" which would run 34'...

Met with my contractor today and he said prices...

Prices have gone up since I first built my garage...:wtf: Have materials gone up over the past 15 years? What is the avg. price per sq. ft for construction (poured concrete foundation w/ nice details, cedar shake roof, etc)? If my math is right, the contractor wants about $50/sq. ft for the...

WIW: Old Shop Lathe for wood, metal, etc.

Tasked with cleaning a house, we uncovered an old metal lathe - the parts in the pics, I could barely move. Must weigh 350-400 lbs! Found two boxes of gears, cogs, and other parts, including the motor to spin this machine. Probably another 250-300 lbs of steel. Aside from taking to the...

Avg. price to build per sq. ft. in metro area?

Is there a rough guide to figure construction in a major metro area for building a garage? Unfinished space is fine, with better than builders grade materials. Just looking for a range... Last time I built, it was ~$37.30/sq. ft. (using my calculations) This was in 1998. Thanks -

Anyone cut poured concrete to expand their garage? How did it go??

Thinking we want to "knock out" the back wall of our garage. Current dimensions are 34' x 26' w/ 6" thick poured concrete walls of varying height. In the back, the height varies from 3' to 5' and would need to be cut (and possibly a portion of the slab, tying into the new) Please let me...

When you built your garage, did you get flack?

New to this site, I have been reading some of the stories about garage construction and some of the woes from neighbors or zoning. Just thought I'd post a poll and ask, "did you have trouble..." When we built our detached garage, the guy across the street had a fit - said we ruined his view of...

Too many cars, not enough space: Your feedback/ideas, appreciated, w/in:

When we bought our house 15 years ago, life was simple. But as we grew, so did the number of vehicles... We had a 2 car garage on the house (19.5 x 20) which is ok for the daily drivers, but wanted something larger for the other cars and shop. Here's what we built... We added a 34 x 26...
