Finished up the monarch 401 I acquired in a package deal a few weeks ago. Thinking I’ll leave it natural. Had to do some repair/machining to get it back in shape Machined the top of the jaws flat again, this must have been the grinders vise of choice, the jaws were about .100” sloped from...

Thanks guys! My speculations were correct that it was supposed to have a locking tab on the bottom of the static base I had also wondered about the extra holes in the base. After looking at them closer, they are not symmetrical or even the same size. Definitely added somewhere along the line...

Thanks for the info! It doesn’t appear the notches function though is my main question. There’s nothing on the base of the vise to sit in them to lock in whatever orientation of swivel. Just the wing nut to hold it secure Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Maybe somebody can help me. I have a prentiss monarch 401, through the bench swivel base. Question is, it has the plate that bolts to the bench, the base sits on top and the stud passes through with the cast wing nut in the bottom to tighten. The bottom of the base is smooth, however the...

Yes, I did discover that. I’m not sure if I’ll try to replicate the original or keep the t screw with it. It is a little of an eye sore, but very functional. Any pics of the 974? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Snagged this Parker 955 on the way home from work tonight. Only got it for $5 less than full asking price but this is one CLEAN vise, IMO. Somebody along the line replaced the set screw with a thumbscrew to hold the handle in place but it’s kind of neat and also handy I think this is going...

Came home to this little guy sitting on the doorstep Picked this one off the bay. Was really hoping for a 604 but I couldn’t pass up the price on this Colombian 603 in excellent shape. Appears some light hammer marks and a small chip on the collar above the screw is all the damage to it...

I too found it to be a bit puzzling. I can’t quite narrow down which one it actually is, I’ve seen the 8400/9400 models but never a “7400” No other markings thank Chicago and HD Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Finished up my restore on the 4” Wilton I picked up a few weeks ago. Still need to make some new swivel lock handles but that can be done later No date stamp on this one, and the screw nut is stamped 7400 So I believe this to be a 4” 7400 HD wilton. Sill marked Chicago so must be one of the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Stopped at an estate sale this AM on the way to work. Noticed a “rare antique vise” stashed in the corner, too rich for my blood. Swung back by on the way home tonight. Vise was still there, now 50% off. So, another Prentiss Monarch followed me home tonight. This one makes 3 in 2 days, I...

Ahhhh, just hold on one second, the 214 does have a “hairline” crack about 1 1/2” long on the top/middle/back of the slide It’s only cosmetic it’s so small. I was originally concerned but after reading it’s very common and usually doesn’t affect functionality I’m ok with it. Still though, you...
