let's see your craftsman block grinders

I checked inside the bottom cover but no joy, there's no date stamp there either...no biggie. Also, either the lightbulb wasn't screwed in all the way or the socket was dirty, I took it out , cleaned the bulb and BINGO!, it works! It's the little things that satisfy...

let's see your craftsman block grinders

I've been looking for a replacement for my 1/4 hp cheap Chinese (Sam's club I think) underpowered grinder. It seems especially lame lately when grinding lathe bits and one finally showed up at a good price on FBM, the first photo is from the ad. Thanks to this forum I knew what this was and...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

I woke up around 3 am and started thinking about the piston, always a fine recipe for a good nights sleep...and it dawned on me that by using the smaller diameter ball and adding the spacer for the seal, I had decreased the compression on the spring about 0.100" compared to the leather cup seal...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

With the spring fixed, the first thing I tried to decrease the downward drift of the cylinder was using an O-ring. I figured it was cheap and I had plenty on hand to experiment with. I found two suitable sizes in the Harbor Freight standard and metric O-ring kits, the red and blue cased ones...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

Thanks Ultradog for the kind words! The size is 8" x 16" and is supposed to be able cut 8" round and 8" x 16" rectangular, though I can't imagine ever cutting anything that big. In fact, the later saws (I think P-44 was the last P-series, at least that I've seen, so after 1944) were renamed...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

The replacement spring I used, Part No. S-70, came from Clausing last August and it was $29.52 which I thought was pretty reasonable. Shipping on the other hand was $22.22 which I thought was pretty pricey. Even so, $52 for the spring delivered is probably still cheaper than getting one made...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

I started working on the hydraulic cylinder when I had a small setback... Thankfully, I bought a spare from Clausing for just such an eventuality after reading that it was a reasonably common failure. It's a simple fix other than supporting the weight of the head when removing the front...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

With the brushes installed, I decided to install the new bi-metal blades and break them in. I used a piece of 1-3/16" diameter 4140 shaft and set the cutting speed at half (53 fpm) the usual speed and cut a bunch of slices. I cut a little over a dozen slices per blade, I have one 10-14 and one...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

Originally, the saw didn't come with any blade brushes and I was going to use a pair of rotating brushes like many of the new saws have but then decided to recreate the later factory style brushes. I already had the one rotating brush made so I decided to add it upstream of the other two...

As received, both hinges for the wheel guards were in pretty mangled shape from the guard resting against (or slamming into) the hinges when fully open, a poor design in my opinion. After getting the hinges straightened out, I've been using a couple of pieces of string to keep from damaging the...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

Here's both of them mounted, just need a little clean-up and paint. I left the little "legs" on the bottom of the holder in case I need them in the future to keep the brushes in, but they seem pretty secure. If they prove to be unnecessary, I will remove them. For now, they aren't hurting...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

From looking at the old catalog and some pictures I found online, it looks like the early saws didn't have blade brushes but I like the design of the factory 816 brushes and wanted to add them to my saw. I ordered a set of brush inserts and brush mounting brackets from Clausing and decided to...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

Just remembered one more tip...if you're ordering from Roton, their standard shipping (UPS?, Fedex?-I don't remember) is rather expensive and they can't tell you what it is until it ships. After hemming and hawing for a couple of minutes and (politely) complaining about the situation, the nice...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

The REASON I finally took the plunge on a saw is because of having a lathe and working at a small fiberglass fan manufacturer in the past. I got permission from the general manager to take home fan shaft drops from the machine shop to feed the lathe. All the material is either 1045 or 316L TGP...

I would like to add a couple of items that might help someone working on a similar saw. I bought all new bearings for the saw (except the guide rollers, of course) from Quality Bearings Online in England. They stock all the major brands (I used all *** bearings), their prices were very good...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

Oops, almost forgot to post some other parts I had to make/repair for the blade guides. There are supposed to be some eccentric bolts to both help adjust the blade guides and align the blade. Mine had three of the four bolts missing and the ones I found online (never checked the Clausing...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

While moving it around for the pictures, the cover was very rattly. There were a set of spring clips that originally held the cover down (not that it would fly up on its own) that were really just anti-rattle clips. A couple of them were broken and it would be a fair amount of work to get the...

Kalamazoo P40 (or P41) 816 horizontal band saw restoration

I installed the covers and belt guard, so it was time for a photo shoot... It's come a long way from where it started... I tell people that when I got it, the blade went around but it couldn't cut anything harder than a stick of warm butter.
