Columbian 4.5" machinist bench vises $125 + shipping

Good catch - I simply pulled up the listing when responding because I was too lazy to go measure. :) But you're absolutely right - this is a 4"jaw vise. It's no wonder why I was so confused when shopping... BTW side of vise is stamped 504, and box labeled 604. Anyway, this explains why the...

Columbian 4.5" machinist bench vises $125 + shipping

The jaw opening was one of the reasons I held off on many other vises - the 504 is spec'd to 7" opening.

Starrett Vise offered to me (pics)

Nope, definitely passed on the vise today. Thanks for all the great info. I considered it for a second, as a 'beater' vise, but I agree - for that price I could get just the same, but new elsewhere. Just picked up a 504 from eBay (see pics here)...

Columbian 4.5" machinist bench vises $125 + shipping

Surprised to find the package here already - wasn't expected until Wednesday, but no complaints! Box was busted up - obvious the vise had tumbled around inside and eventually the handle broke through. Luckily no damage. My impressions are mixed. I use old-school Columbian 604's all day long at...

Starrett Vise offered to me (pics)

Took a quick look at the vise today - wasn't able to find any identifying markings except on the bottom, "INDIA" cast into the swivel base. :( I could probably take it off his hands for $40, but not sure if I want to even do that. One side of the dynamic jaw, when mated to the static, was a...

And PS - thank you everyone for the helpful info - you could have saved me from paying for something it wasn't.

Starrett Vise offered to me (pics)

Yep, on closer inspection of the pictures, I'm betting that handle was replaced - there is a roll pin used as a handle retainer.... Sorry I didn't realize that uploads became resized. See above for (now) larger.

Starrett Vise offered to me (pics)

Interesting. Perhaps he took one look at the color, saw the "S", and jumped the gun. I'm certainly no aficionado myself.

Starrett Vise offered to me (pics)

Fellow co-worker, on hearing that I was shopping around for some old-iron, offered me to sell me his unused "Sterrett", leftover from a family member. Claims it is a Sterrett, and I am inclined to believe him (he's an industrial mechanic, and good machinist), but I can't seem to find any like...

    Suggestions for pit cover/support?

Hi Terry, If I had to venture a guess, it's about 5.5' deep. The bottom is entirely gravel, unsure on depth. I just add/remove gravel to suit the height, and the entire floor is a 'drain' (ha!) Of course I don't drain fluids purposfully here, but if a little oil or coolant drips down, I don't...

    Suggestions for pit cover/support?

OK here's the scoop - pit is indeed only 3' wide (you would think I'm never in it, HA!) wall-to-wall. Roughly 7.5' long. The LIP, is 1.5" high, and 3.5" wide all the way around. The concrete slab appears to be poured all the way down to the first block, with perhaps a solid cap on top the...

    Suggestions for pit cover/support?

First off, THANKS for all the replies! I was expecting to get an email notification, but I guess I didn't have them turned on. Now that there is some interest, I'll be sure to get some picture and dimensions. The steel grating that I've been exposed to is *heavy*: plus it would make rolling a...

    Suggestions for pit cover/support?

Hi Folks, I have a detached 1.5 car garage with a concrete slab, and built-in car pit. It's a great feature, but due to the layout of my garage (pillars and such), it makes positioning jacks/jack stands around it difficult. It supports a single tire from a 1/2ton pickup fine, but I do more than...
