    Old manhole cover...ideas?

A city worker gave me a sewer manhole cover they were discarding. He said it was almost 100yrs old, but I have no idea. It is heavy as ****. I thought I might be able to make a vice stand out of it by welding pipe w/ plate on the top to what was the underside of the cover? Anyone else recycled...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Yeah, the price is right I think...$75 and there is just nothing around me used. This one is about 45mins away. But I always compare the asking price to the new model retail ($900+ in this case)...and for what $75 would get you at HF;) Plus parts are still available.

Wilton bullet vise restoration can grinder hit all parts????

I'm far from the vise restoration expert, but I think yours looks good using a wire wheel. Not sure why you'd need to put it in a tank for rust removal. It's doesn't look like heavy rust in the pictures. I would wire brush (hand or machine) any remaining rust and either: A) Paint with Rustoleum...

Getting a Welder, have some questions

I have a Makita that cost $80 and a $9.99 Harbor Freight (with coupon), I have no complaints re: the Harbor Freight cheapo grinder.

    Show us your welding projects

I'm a beginner too and will leave the 'real' advice to the experienced welders but I will say if you haven't invested in a tank/regulator and using a shielding gas, you should. Even straight CO2 (it's cheap) and get away from the flux core wire, it just seems easier to 'control' the weld to me.

A quick clean-up of my Wilton eBay purchase (in one picture is my old red Wilton). In my bike shop I have a 5" (I think) Columbian that is from the 70's. It's a beast that gets a workout just about every day, will try and grab a picture of it. Before: After:

    Wilton Vise damage...questions

Agreed, I should have been just wiped down with Wd-40, and left alone but since it was an eBay purchase I was looking for pre-exsisting damage - not sure why as it worked fine. Too much interweb reading I guess:lol_hitti The good news is I didn't do anything with the broken area, just...

    Wilton Vise damage...questions

Mine broke due to my own carelessness in removing the pins. But, there wasn't a lot of material - looks like the holes/pins were placed extremely close the the back edge. A press would have worked better than a hammer and drift pin. But as I've said above there isn't any reason to remove them...

    Wilton Vise damage...questions

I'm pretty sure you can't rotate it due to where the key surface is faced on the insert. I did a test fit tonight, the broken piece still has about 70%~80% contact area and the pin is really tight (it's not moving). Between this and the other side holding it....and the fact that I don't know...

    leaf vac

My home is SURROUNDED by large oaks, and backs up to about 10 acres of deep woods. So many leaves that if I try to just mulch them with my Gator blades, I'd have two feet deep of leaf mulch in my yard. Far and away the single best investment I've made in my home maintenance is a Cyclone Rake...

    Wilton Vise damage...questions

It's just a scratch. I've looked it over really good for cracks, or signs of fatigue and it's solid, other than this issue with the holes for the pins.

    Wilton Vise damage...questions

Not sure where to post this so Mods please move it needed. Was cleaning my recently purchased Wilton 400s, while removing the pins I accidentally chipped part of the casting. In looking at it, it seems that the pin holes are drilled right at the edge. I'm wondering if it was made like that, or...

    Excessive moisture... what to do

I had the same issue when I lived in Colorado. Does the water pool in an area that might allow you to install one or two floor drains? Where I live now, a garage floor drain can be treated like a gutter and drain into the yard - and doens't have to run to septic or sewer. Edit: Just read that...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

This VISES thread was how I discovered GJ, as I was looking for a part for a small Wilton vise I've had forever. Who knew there were other folks like me that got excited about a vise, LOL? While looking for the parts for my old vise, I found a 1981 Wilton 400s on eBay. I've beat the hell out of...
