Getting started on my dream shop...

It's been so long since I've been here (lotsa life happening in the past 5 years) I almost feel like I need to re-introduce myself. Instead, I'll introduce my dream shop. It's going to be part of our dream home, and I can't do anything except plan until our construction loan is approved. So...

    Basement humidity problem revisited

Hmm. Well, what I *usually* get is just damp dirt, and it's usually fairly uniform. The idea of a stone drain path is interesting, although I'm not sure how effective it would really be. I think I can go towards this in two phases: first, get a drain from the center of the dirt installed that...

    Basement humidity problem revisited

Here's a photo of the basement, the ceiling is 7' tall. As you can see, there's no wall to try to seal. The water comes out essentially out of the center of this photo, runs under the plastic and onto the floor. Even when it's not so wet as to actually be running water the dirt gets quite...

    Basement humidity problem revisited

Ok, let's see about the comments: 1. To the point of "solving the problem". I'm open to any suggestions on how to keep 7-8 ft. of water table from encroaching (that's how high the upper side yard is from the basement. Guttering already sheds the water to both sides of the property from the...

    Basement humidity problem revisited

Showkey, The HVAC ductwork is accessible in the basement, but no vents are plumbed into the basement area. I'm not using this area for anything but storage, and 60% RH is dry enough to keep mold/fungus from growing and steel from rusting, which is my goal. The concrete walls are just support...

    Basement humidity problem revisited

Actually, that's kinda what I did, although I don't have any pump. I just secured the dehumidifier to an unused workbench and have it drain into the bucket. Have a good one, Mike

    Basement humidity problem revisited

No sump pump. The yard continues to slope away from the lowest edge of the house, so I will probably try to figure out some way to plumb a permanent drain into one of the gutter downspouts, that's just not on the list yet. Have a good one, Mike

    Basement humidity problem revisited

Greetings, folks! Hope y'all had a happy Thanksgiving and are working towards a Merry Christmas! About a year ago y'all helped me get the humidity under control in my under-house basement, and I wanted to give you a one year update. The old thread is here...

    Help in dehumidifying a basement...

Hot Springs, AR. Probably fairly middle of the road from a temperature and humidity POV, except for the nearby (1/2 mile?) lake. Thanks for confirming what my engineering brain thought about ventilation. I expect the temps in the basement will stay pretty constant year round, and dew points...

    Help in dehumidifying a basement...

Whether my dehumidifier is an LGR or not I don't know, other than the one I'm running is pulling a lot of water out of the air on a daily basis. So, with that running, what should I do with the vents? Let them continue to open when it warms up, or keep them closed?

    Help in dehumidifying a basement...

First off, thanks in advance for any help. I'm trying to get the humidity in my basement under control. It's unfinished, vapor barriers on the open dirt and typical shuttered vents for airflow (they're closed this time of year). Humidity levels are way too high; to the point of having...

A list to help the young techs out there

I've just retired from 32 years as a software engineer and have joined my Dad at his specialty car shop as a newbie mechanic after wrenching on the side during my engineering career. I bought a used Matco box full of fairly cheap tools. When I was getting I was showing what I had to my Dad and...

    A difference floor levelling question

Re: A different floor levelling question Sorry it took so long to get back, I changed my email address and couldn't verify it from my work laptop. I've done some digging into door seals and thresholds, and I can't find anything that tells me how much of a gap these seals can fill. Also, with...

    A difference floor levelling question

Greetings, folks! Haven't posted here much due to life, but that's probably about to change when I get moved up to my new house in Hot Springs, AR. First big project is a detached 2-car garage that was built with the intent of not having a front door (I think). The garage (and the house) is...

I played hooky from work today and...

Unfortunately I've been taking several vacation days lately working on getting our house ready to put on the market (I'm retiring from my current career at the end of this year). My wife and I have been painting the interior (as painters go I'm a great engineer!), just about got that done...

What do you use to sharpen lawn mower blades?

Just jack up the mower on one side. That's worked on every riding mower I've ever owned. HTH, and have a good one, Mike

    Why Buy New?

Wow, those are coming out fantastic. Only criticism I have are your photos; c'mon man, we want to see what those boxes REALLY look like! I think I can see what you're saying about the top hinges; looks like there isn't anything to keep them from going over-center, unless the hinges are...

Just unearthed a whole box of beat up Craftsman sockets, what to do now?

No argument there. I was just thinking that you could very well overwhelm your local store. BTW, good "unearthing" a buried treasure! Have a good one, Mike

Just unearthed a whole box of beat up Craftsman sockets, what to do now?

I wouldn't spend a lot of time cleaning them up. Then, the ones that you think are too rough to use, take them back and swap them out. If SEARS balks at the number you bring back, then ask them what they want to do (this is assuming you have a SEARS store that's less than an hour away)...

    Contractors and cell phones

Re: Contractors and cel phones Funny, when I saw the title of the thread I thought it was going to be some customer that was having problems with work getting done because the crews were always using their cell phones. I'm a customer, and I always make my calls when I have something specific...
