Congratulations on the retirement Thomas! I'm sure you'll be just as busy if not more so. You need a slide scanner, something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0038WJXIM/?tag=atomicindus08-20. Scans the slides to an SD card. You can get ones which will plug straight into a computer.

How about getting some simple, large mesh, guards for the lights folded up? Wouldn't contain the glass but would give them some protection.

Most brick stuff in the UK is just that. The walls would be entirely brick rather than just a facing to the wooden structure :).
