    Extending my ground wire

Why would you not just install a new ground rod in a more convenient location. They are not too expensive and unless you hit a boulder on the way down the job should not be to hard to do. I'm actually asking you this because I need to install my ground rod in the next couple of days. Albert

    Vinyl tile floor help?

iluv I wish I could give you all the answers in one shot. I spent hours reading the site, going to manufacturers websites and focusing on my floor. Is the garage heated? Do you live in a cold climate, do you have moisture issues. These are some of the questions you need to know. I am going...

Slab to footing insulation for radiant heat question

I did a shallow frost protected foundation for my garage. I have not got the gas connected yet and am not sure when it wil get done as the contractor I hired to do it quit and moved to Costa Rica. In northern Alberta where the economy is in good shape I think it ended up costing about the same...

    Wax for VCT???

There are some builds on this site that are a real inspiration to me. I love the way you textured the walls and am really considering this too. It is not common here in Alberta to to texture the walls. But I am really impressed with how your floor turned out. I had decided to do VCT and...

    3/4" Pex to foam question

I would suggest that instead of cable ties you use rebar tie wire. You won't need to trim the excess, it is cheap and it is easy to work with. We did 1000' of pex for my garage floor. Albert

    Northern Garage build

This weekend was a long weekend and my wife and I managed to get a fair amount of work accomplished. The siding if finished, the interior wall studs are all up and we did some work on the landscaping that had to be dealt with as a result of building the garage. I did end up removing and...

    Northern Garage build

The development permit and building permit were a pain. Originally I wanted to build a steel quonset but that wasn't going to happen. After I changed to a conventional building and proved that the engineer was ok with it, things got easier. I met a guy who lives near by and he built a 30x50...

Idea for lighting 24x24 garage. Anyone shed some light

If you want to add more light the Canadian electrical code will let you just loop the power from one light to the next. Or that's the way I understand it it to read. So adding more lights won't be that much of a hassle. Just hang the fixture, drill a hole and poke enough wire up up the hole...

    Northern Garage build

O2Hawk, I found out the same thing. I needed to buy a boiler to heat the floor. I also needed to have a professional design the heating system. I figured that would add about $7,000.00 or more to the project cost. Originally I wanted water in the garage and too have a washroom. We live...

    Northern Garage build

Al, Some counties are easier than others. Before we got our building permit we had tp get a development permit. I think that permits will end up in the top 10 costs for the building. My wife thinks we spent close to $1,000 just on permits. I guess it helps pay for the paved roads in the county.

    Northern Garage build

The inspection is called "exterior membrane" and the inspector was looking at how I flashed around the windows and doors and how I applied the building paper. I needed to get this done before we could apply the siding. When he arrived he also checked my framing and attic venting. He told me...

    South Florida FNG

I think I have read every post you did about Billy Bob. I have a '49 1 ton Chev and I am currently building a shop so I can have some space, light and heat to work with. Welcome to the site Albert

    Northern Garage build

I have not gone up to measure but I think I am out about 1". I did not realize that something was wrong until I noticed that the electrical outlets on either side of the door did not line up the same with the groves in the siding. I will probably take down one side this weekend and fix it. I...

    Northern Garage build

The bolsters are called chairs, some were 3" and some were 6" so that the rebar wire was spaced 3" and 6" from the foam along the sides and 6" in the center. I had extra mesh so I installed a row along the center of the foundation so that the Wheelbarrows full of concrete could travel easily...

    Let the build begin!

Al, I live just outside of Sherwood Park. We both started about the same time and I am impressed by how much ahead of me you are. Did you get your building inspected? I have to add some studs to my walls where the top plates are spliced and I see that you didn't have to add studs. Nice...

    Northern Garage build

This weekend I managed to get most of the siding up. My gorgeous bride ( of 7 years) gave me a hand but most of it I did myself. It turned out really good but I do have to figure out how one side of the garage door wall ended up at a different height than the other side. I hope I don't have...
