Extractor Socket Types (Wedge, Spiral, Straight Flute) Get Multiple Types?

The Mayhew square ones with straight flutes rarely fail me and Mayhew rebrands them for all the trucks. If I can't drill a hole, then fluted sockets work pretty well. I bought the Icon spiral insert extractors and they've worked okay, but I think the square Mayhews bite harder and break less...

Do water key end bits exist the square 5/16” to put on a ratchet or hex bit?

I mean, all you're looking for are pipe plug sockets in internal/external square drive, Snap-On sells them and probably others like Sunex and Ko-ken. That being said, this request is unhinged and just sounds like carrying junk around in your pockets with the bizarre goal always being prepared...

Your Best Tool Purchase in 2025?

I would have an irrationally good time cleaning this thing up and repainting it. That looks so fun.

Hey you guys pick heavy stuff up… what do I do with this thing?

If you're determined to restore this thing, I don't think you should skimp on the shop. You need steel beams and a gantry crane to deal with this thing safely.

Your Best Tool Purchase in 2025?

OTC 7703, 10 pound slide hammer. I don't fight stuff anymore, I just give it a whack with that monster. Everything comes out in three hits max. That thing will pull the threads off a bolt, I swear.

I don't have a thread pitch gauge for these giant ACME threads, but it looks like they're 4 TPI. The screw OD is 7/8" on the money.

    18th Annual GJ Secret Santa - 2025!

You're so welcome! I definitely stalked your post history for a while to find stuff that I was positive you could make use of and needed. Hope you have fun looking at literally everything in your shop with the thermal camera, that's what I would do with one.

    18th Annual GJ Secret Santa - 2025!

My Secret Santa didn't include their username, but thanks to Jeff and your fat cat, we were away camping for Christmas! The mechanical carpenter's pencils are a cool thing I would never have thought to buy, and will definitely save the mess I'm always making shaving pencils. The donation to my...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

So, after owning and abusing my Parker 434 1/2 for about 10 of it's 100+ years after both of the previous owners (Redwood Oil & Gas Co, followed by a local farmer in that area, Santa Rosa, CA) also abused it heavily, I did something extra stupid with it today and felt a hitch instead of buttery...

Are tool truck sockets “worth it” for the professional?

The thing is, 3/8 goes down pretty small and up pretty big, and I have 3 different 1/4 ratchets with 3/8 heads that fit in small spaces. The benefit of 3/8 is that I only have to bring one set of sockets and ratchets out on my cart, unless I also need 1/2 for big suspension stuff. I really just...

Are tool truck sockets “worth it” for the professional?

It's actually pretty rare I use 1/4" for *anything* I just use 3/8" drive down to 6mm for most things, I think 1/4" shallow chrome are some of the most under-used sockets I own.

Are tool truck sockets “worth it” for the professional?

It used to be that Snap-On swivels were so good you wouldn't even consider anyone else for them. These days, there's no reason to buy any socket from a truck unless it's specialty, or it's something you break a lot (I'm a big fan of Snap-On's gold hex/torx bit sockets) In general, you'll get...

    Tool carts these days

Yeah, it's pretty goofy that there's probably $3000+ worth of tools there completely crammed into a cart I bought new in the store for about $60. I have a wall of Icon boxes in the garage, but I really need to commit to a larger cart for the backyard. I think I am probably going to end up going...

    Tool carts these days

Something I've actually been really considering is getting an overpriced set of those from Snap-On with the cart I've been shopping for, since my current one really bumps and shakes as it trundles across my patio and over the door threshold. I expect it would be a smoother experience with those.

    An interesting Sears article today.

It's not that Craftsman makes garbage, it's that consumers don't buy it and SBD really doesn't seem to prioritize the brand, putting it first on the chopping block every time. There's no real indication that the Craftsman deal has been a big win for Lowes - that's why they've shifted more...

    Tool carts these days

I only load per job. The issue is sometimes the job is so big the cart can't hold everything without being a giant jumbled mess. Extra drawers would spread it out a little more
