Show your Vintage Boy Scout Tools

I had several of my Scouts who completed the Scoutmaster Conference, the last requirement that had to be done before they turned 18, the night before their 18th birthday. You can't cut it much closer than that! Agreed! About 2-4% of youth who join earn the Eagle Award. I always hoped that...

I've always heard it as two equally explosive liquids, perfume and gasoline!

    V3 Bug/Suggestion Box

Ryan, Going into some threads I've previously read to the end I am sent to the first page. Clicking on the 'Jump to new' I'm not being taken to the 'new' post but to a earlier post (which I've already read) that shows the new tag at top right. Backing up one page and clicking on the 'Jump to...

Show your Vintage Boy Scout Tools

While I did not earn my Eagle Award, over the 20+ years I was a Scoutmaster I had the honor and pleasure of working with young men as they earned theirs. It is a signature accomplishment for anyone who earns it!

WTB: Fuel Tank Cap for Poulan Super 25DA

The threads on the cap for my '78 Poulan Super 25DA got buggered up and it will not seal the tank. This part is no longer available and my online searches have been fruitless. Does anyone have access to one of these that will turn a 'paper weight' into a usable saw? TIA!

    J.C. Penny tools

This is the only J.C. Penney tool I own. Got it in 78-79 time frame. I had a VW Fastback and used it to turn the crankshaft when I was tuning it. The number on the handle is 1236. Edit: Apparently I lied (or had an attack of 'old timers' disease). I found this Penncraft 8 Piece Screwdriver...

    V3 Bug/Suggestion Box

Ryan, It would be handy to have the Thread Name displayed somewhere when viewing the thread. I currently have to move the mouse to the browser tab to remind myself what thread I'm viewing. Low priority, at best. Thanks

    V3 Bug/Suggestion Box

Ryan, Please excuse my fellow member from Tennessee . Any change is tough and sometimes the best you can hope for is to annoy everyone equally. We'll adapt eventually. I appreciate your efforts and the quick response you're giving issues!

    V3 Bug/Suggestion Box

Ryan, I also found that trying to go the a new post typically took you to one in late April. Until that item gets to the top of the list, I've found that going back to the forum, e.g. General Tool Discussion, and clicking on the thread link will take you to the 'real' new post. Edit: It may...

    Welcome Home Fellas…

Ryan, as a retired software developer I very much appreciate your support of GJ and understand how change can be challenging to those on the other side of the system! I'm sure I'll quote from 'The Book of Threats' some before I adjust, but adjust I will. I have noticed that my signature is no...

    2021 Garage Sale Thread

Lesser, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who wears gloves with holes in the fingers! I frequently 'patch' them with duct tape so I can use them for awhile longer.

    Getting Started with AC Repairs

You might want to get a couple of spare schrader valve cores. I leaked almost $1000 worth of R12 from my heat pump when one didn't completely close after a seasonal maintenance!

    Keep it or toss it?

My dad would mix used motor oil with gasoline and use that to keep electric fences clear of weeds. I'll probably be arrested for even remembering that!

    Hand Cleaner favorites

Growing up Lava was the go-to hand cleaner. It even removes the 'wax' you get from harvesting tobacco. Really cleans, but it's rough on the skin! Now I just wipe the worst off and go for dish detergent. I may or may not have used gasoline for really tough/stubborn stuff!

Member since June 2020 and lurking before that

Thanks to you and all the others for the warm welcome to GJ! Thanks also for the alert about the split nut. I read the entire "The VISES of Garage Journal" thread, so I was prepared for the Reed split nut. I was able to disassemble my vise with no problems (I was lucky). It was on a...

We live in NE TN, close to VA and NC. Nice country around Nashville, but too urban for us. Living in the Houston, TX area and between D.C. and Baltimore, MD convinced us that lifestyle was not for us. Since you're no longer in TN, I hope you are happy where you are.

I joined GJ in June 2020 but was lurking before that. I found this site when searching for information on restoring vises. I have my dad's Reed 2C which was working okay, but I wanted to clean it up and properly lubricate it. I couldn't believe the amount of useful information here and wanted...
