    Cheap LED Shop Lighting

I used direct wire LED T8 bulbs in four standard fluorescent, 2 bulb fixtures 48" at 5000K just below daylight color at 2800 lumens each. I removed the ballast, starter, and rewired all of the fixtures to power 120v directly at the power end of the bulb It was bright at first, but I love the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Smitty, I used a little bit of mineral spirits, a heavy paper towel and a plastic HF scraper. See the color below. I am no artist, but I am also not color blind, and that hospital green you predicted looks awfully close to what was under the black paint. Cheers, Nashbalto

I like the Art-Deco styling in cast iron. Very cool!

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Smitty, I think you are right about the hospital green, it appears that there is a layer of green under neath the black. The black was definitely an overspray. There was some black paint that had leaked into the edge of the crevice between the machined surfaces of the SJ. There are a number...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

No. 60 SJ from Maryland Fort Meade. Initial clean up! I have used Scotch Brite and Fluid Film for the initial clean up and I am very happy with the condition of this vise. One of the coolest features on the Swivel Jaw (SJ) is the tapered plug that makes the jaw rock solid in the parallel jaw...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

It is! Thanks for noticing. In high school in 1980 I had a 1973 75" with reverse. Last fall, looking through ebay, found a local 1962 25" fwd only that was not running. Owned by the same family since new, but hadn't run in 20-25 years. Cleaned gas tank crud, rebuilt the carb, back lapped the...

Wilton Bullet Vise date stamping. show yours with or without EXP on slide

Steaks&Anvil pointed me to this thread for my new to me No. 60 SJ - Pat Pend Chicago casting. No date stamp on the key from what I can see. While recognizing that this is not definitive proof, does this indicate that this bullet's true manufacture date is the same period as the casting...

4" Wilton Vice Garage Sale Find

I told This is actually a pretty good story: Seller from CL was asking $50, which I offered. A friend chided me that I would be taking advantage of him. ( I didn't have a good comeback) So I informed the seller that he had one of the earliest Wiltons out there anywhere, and that the casting...

4" Wilton Vice Garage Sale Find

I wasn't at a garage sale, but found on CL what I am learning from some old threads is a rare Pat Pend Chicago Wilton this week: No. 60 SJ (600SJ) For now just looking to find a date stamp if there is one, cleaning gently, and lubricating. I won't make a decision on refinishing until I see...

Wilton Bullet Vises - Relative Rarity by size?

Apologies up front for tacking onto an old thread, but... I just picked up a Pat Pend No. 60 SJ today in MD. So there is a +1 to add to your list. Relativly new to GJ, and have some pics posted and other details posted under 'nashbalto'. Will be trying to carefully disasseble for cleaning...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

So if I am hearing you correctly, then if there is no date stamp, it doesn't confirm a '41-'44 range of actual manufacture of the whole unit. I think I will gently remove the key when I get it set up for full disassembly and cleaning this weekend just to check another box on background. If...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Smitty, I have read through some of your threads here, and I appreciate all of the information you provide to this forum. I got really lucky this week and wanted to share my find. It seems to be a period correct No. 60 SJ from 1941-1944. This vise from Fort Meade and was a purchased at a...

Looking for a decent shop fan

Cutting a slot would probably work, but now that I think about it I used a pair of channel locks to grip the cup at the top of the caster which was enough to grip the assembly to tighten. Probably easier than cutting. Nashbalto

30" Pedestal Fan - Added 3" Locking Casters.- Harbor Freight z cheap but not cheap. Well constructed Pedestal Fan. Spring loaded pole adjustment.. Moves alot of air at the low speed which is not that noisy. High speed (3rd chain pull) has unbelievable CFM but is pretty loud in my all...
