Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

Ace10, I'm using spacers (1/8) with the 1/16 alignment system. Additionally, my tiles are 6x36, so they're heavy. I'll watch out for this, though! Thanks for the heads-up!

storage strategies for woodworking, auto maintenance, and man cave in same garage

Anyone basically live in the garage? I have storewall on all of my exterior walls, but am looking for some more good storage strategies to keep the clutter under control. I have a portable lift that I roll over to the 3rd bay (smallest) all of the time. I also have a lot of woodworking tools...

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

Feeling confident! I've seen a few other tile installs on the forum using a decoupling membrane (looks like ditra, but there is a knock-off out there now as well). Can't wait for the stuff to arrive and get this started!

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

duneslider, it looks a lot nicer than those with a stupid tool (i.e. expensive pliers) to set wedges. being able to just spin them down and then off of the used consumable pieces looks like a good idea. I watched a guy do a 400 sq ft room with them and the results were nice. He used ditra as...

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

FWIW, I'm going to try out the rigid branded leveling system. All of that will be in the tile thread. This is my first real tile job, so we'll see how it turns out!

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

Toomanytools, definitely not needed. I'm just doing it in hopes that decouping and making it basically a floating floor will help with crack mitigation at the control joints. My slab won't be etched, etc. Their installation videos recommend a thorough cleaning and sweeping. No mention of...

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

Found the 323sq ft for $380.00 plus freight (which was $175 on 14 bags of the thinset). All-in, the addition of ditra costs about $1200 (which is exactly 1/2 what the tile cost)

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

It's settled, I just ordered schluter unmodified thinset, their v-groove trowel, 2 of the big rolls of ditra. I'll post my progress in the tile thread I started here last year. Hoping to get this rolling soon so I can be installing base and painting foundation lips when it starts to get cold...

Dan C, are you drooling over that lift install like I am? Would love to do a level installation like that and some others here on GJ. Not sure if the next owner would appreciate it! LOL

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

duneslider, totally agree with you. They do, however market it for spanning control joints, which is my only concern. In the tutorial videos, they thinset right over the joint with zero extra measures taken. There are older videos out there with them driving a loaded fork truck on ditra, and...

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

Thanks guys. I was doing reading about ditra over control joints. I'm definitely going to put a membrane down as I've talked myself into it now. I see that it is very popular with dealerships, so I'd trust it. I don't think expansion/contraction is going to be an issue; just bridging the...

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

Lol, I see there are strong opinions both ways. I'll stick with the roll-on membrane unless someone makes a convincing argument for the added expense and time that persuades me. Thanks to everyone who took the time to read my post. I'm using a barn board looking PEI IV thrubody tile. It is...

Any reason to consider schluter ditra for garage tile job?

I could only find one thread with no conclusion, but I'm sure there is info here. I understand it is just an isolation membrane. I was planning on using redgard or similar. I'm picking up my tile today and am going to start collecting other materials needed. I'm ready to clean and sika the...

Porcelain tile advice, how to do it right?

you can buy black and white porcelain tile for the chessboard look. VCT won't hold up in my garage because I weld, grind, use floor jacks and jack stands and have a portable scissor lift that will grind anything abrasive right into the face of the tile. I appreciate the feedback, and if my...

Porcelain tile advice, how to do it right?

You still around? I'm getting ready to start tiling. I ended up renovating the entire garage, installing a home theater, mini-split, more storewall slatwall, new 220 outlets everywhere, crown with drop crown and LED strip lights, a locking server rack for gaming equipment and a bunch of other...

Another scissor lift vs flooring thread... what works best?

@Cairo94507, that is one nice tile job! I love that you did the toe kick on the cabinets. I ended up redoing a bunch of drywall and then installing a 150" screen and an old 1080p projector we had along with a huge area rug so that we could use the garage for a hangout area during the lockdown...

Mini split install -- EPA certification required or not?

The head units are usually pre-charged with nitrogen.

Mini split install -- EPA certification required or not?

This is old, but I can't resist adding my $.02. Legally (federally but not locally), If the unit is pre-charged (you're not adding refrigerant to the lines because you're under the maximum line length) and you just need to vacuum the lines, you're fine. Regardless of the legality, your...

Porcelain tile advice, how to do it right?

Thanks LX-Markham and StRacerDuke! I did visit a national chain tile store last Saturday. They claimed that it wasn't a good idea to put tile of any kind in a garage as expected and were willing to install it, but would not guarantee the work or product if I were using it as a garage. Funny...
