Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Marching on . . . Starting to install the blocking and trim for the lower wainscoting / wire chase. Each of the blocks is custom measured and cut for a tight fit. 1/2" CDX plywood panels will be screwed on below the rail height (which is set at work bench height) and flush out with the face...

Thanks for the heads up on the electrical. I'll look into seeing what I put in. I figured a 12v feed shouldn't be a big issue.

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Ah! Finally! I reached a major milestone with the shed: All the siding is now installed. And it only took 2 months. Oh well. It's all done now. I'll do the final top coat of paint and soffit staining in the spring when there's more consistent, better weather. The project is heading...

New build: Arts & Crafts style garage in historic neighborhood

Exactly my thoughts, too. Though I'd say maybe 1 - 1.5 ft recess. But the idea is the same. Recess the gate so that it breaks up the elevation and gives it some relief. In any case, the walkway look excellent, James! Very nice.

The little one car that could

I hate those shows. . . they give my wife unrealistic expectations of how quickly I "should" get projects done.

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Thanks. I'll take some pix of the inside once the painting rack is gone, the floor is cleaned up, and the wiring chase is in at the bottom of the wood wall. It'll be toward the end of the project but that might not be too far out. I'm thinking I have another week-ish before I'm finish with...

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Being close enough to getting the wall sconces finished I've been working on that and pulling the electrical wires the last several days instead of doing the siding. Now that the sconces are installed I'll be getting back to the siding. All in all I'm very pleased with how the sconces did...

    Re-use lumber from footing forms?

I'm really glad I rented the stem wall forms for my shed foundation pour. I was planning on re-using the footing form board but that didn't happen. Word of advice, don't get lazy after the poor. Strip the footing boards when the footings have firmed up (a day or two or so). My time was so...

    Hanging Tools from Particle Board

I like the concept of pegboard and the modular hook systems but hated the fact that the hooks would come out, too. Then I found the best pegboard hooks: Durahook by Triton Products They're well made and can be mounted in 4 directions (up, down, left, and right). This isn't a big deal with...

How do you store your spray cans?

In one garage I was in I liked putting them on shelves between the studs. These shelves were basically 1x4's fastened within the stud cavity going from stud to stud. Similar to some examples in the thread JSBriggs posted. Depending on the situation, I might open up a section of drywall (or...

New build: Arts & Crafts style garage in historic neighborhood

Hey, looks good, James. I agree, moving the table to the center would look a bit better balanced and you'd probably feel less "crowded" with your back to the isle between the cars vs. being sandwiched between a car's bumper and the table. Can't sway which side would be best for the tool chests...

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Despite the 4 days from Thanksgiving to Sunday, very little noticeable progress happened on the shed. Thanksgiving was spent with family. Got a lot of stuff prepped for the shed on Friday after morning errands. Saturday morning was spent at the gun range with my cousin. That afternoon I...

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Thanks. Weather wise this is about normal for the winter in the NW other than the odd dusting of snow we got and the cold snap. Temps are back to normal (high 30's to mid 40's) and we're back to normal weather (overcast, some drizzle here or there, patches of sun this weekend).

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

The panel joints are open 5/16" gaps and are part of the siding pattern. I could have staggered them but I like the look of a clean and regular grid pattern. Lends it a more modern look. Thanks. I'm excited to see how the lighting turns out. It simply made sense for me to tie it into the...

Shed Project: New Construction Build Thread

Wow, it has seeming been a while since I posted last. Still working on the shed. Things still going slow. Weather is getting colder. It was actually snowing this morning. Not all that much has happened. Several more siding panels were installed since the last post. Most of the three walls...

    Drywall walls or ceiling first?

Depends on how you plan to make the soffits. Are the soffits going to be framed out of 2x lumber (2x3's or 2x4's?). If yes, then frame them up, run your wiring, plumbing, insulation, then sheet rock everything. If you make the bottom of the soffits out of 2x6's I think that might give you...

    My sweet 10x20 "M" Garage

If part of the problem for not going bigger is the percentage of impervious coverage (solid, non-drainable ground cover, like house, garage, driveway, walkway) is there any change of replacing part of the driveway / front walkway with some pervious (drainable) paving material? In other words...

    Permit for any size shed

Many of the local building departments around the Seattle region have fliers and hand outs that help walk home owners through a permitting process. And I've found the building department officials can be helpful letting you know the next steps you need to take. Might be worth stopping in the...
