    Embossing Sheet metal

Thanks. Just standard low carbon cold rolled sheet. I think the tonnage was around 35, but I could only do a letter or so at a time. To do the entire panel at once would have taken much more. I've heard it can be done with an English wheel and a poly roller, but I haven't tried it. The force...

    Embossing Sheet metal

Thanks. The .025" was the thickness of the letters, or depth of the emboss. The thickness of the panel matched that of the trunk lid. Don't remember the number. The polyurethane came from McMaster Carr. Tom

    Embossing Sheet metal

When I was building my 1972 Chevelle SS, the name I decided on was based on the history of the car. Since it was originally blue but would ultimately be black, what better name would there be than Back In Black? I decided it would look cool to emboss the name in the trunk lid like on the AC/DC...

    Lightweight material needed

Rigid foam insulation board with a thin plywood skin on each side would make a very strong and light weight deck. You would need to use a water based contact cement to laminate and for the edging. Tom

    Bathroom vent pipe smells

Is there a floor drain or a shower that doesn't get used often? Traps can dry out.

    Breathing air from a compressor

Not sure it was even that long ago. I am very familiar with the smell. :) Tom

    Breathing air from a compressor

I did research this and found that there are many SAR systems on the market that use rotary vane compressors with carbon vanes. Any dust produced by the blades is addressed by an inline HEPA filter. Tom

    Temporary car body stand ideas?

When I restored my '72 Chevelle, I built a simple wooden cradle to support the body for access to the underside. It was made of 4x4's with 3/4" plywood gussets and mounting tabs, with casters to make it mobile. It worked great and was easy to get rid of when it had served it's purpose. Tom

    "Bad" welding gas?

Your mention of brake cleaner in the same sentence as welding makes a reminder worthwhile that using brake cleaner with any high source of heat such as welding, can be a fatal mistake. Gases such as hydrogen chloride and even phosgene can be produced in the process. Tom

help bending small piece of sheet aluminum

You have to get it hotter than you think to anneal it, generally around 780ºF. An easy way to tell is to scribble a mark along the bend and heat the stock up until the mark disappears. You can quench it in water after to cool, or not. Tom

    Breathing air from a compressor

You need an oil free source of air and piston type air compressors don't fall into that category. I use a vane type pump (Gast) for mine. You also need to consider the type of hose used. Those intended for breathing air are readily available and won't leach bad stuff into the air, unlike PVC...

    Machined Brass Puzzle

Like I said, I reverse engineered it from one I saw in a video for my own use. You can buy one from a place called Craighill, or make it yourself. Tom

    Machined Brass Puzzle

I first sawed the stock to length and then used a 1/4" corner rounding end mill on the lathe to form the radiused ends. The cuts in the sides were made in a vise on the mill, using a work stop and collet block to index them. There was some doubt in my mind whether the design was correct, so I...

    Machined Brass Puzzle

I saw a cool puzzle yesterday and decided I had to have one. The price seemed a bit steep at $95, so my cheap *** self found a review on You Tube and reverse engineered the pieces, modeling and detailing them in Onshape. The parts are made from 1/2" brass bar, so it was fun to work with and has...

    Adhesive Recommedations Please

An old school solution would be Pliobond. Coat both surfaces, let it tack up and stick them together. The stuff will stick to anything and is stronger than ordinary contact cement. Tom

    Good guided tap wrench?

Thanks. I got involved in a startup company a while back and there just wasn't time to keep them up. Now the company is sold and I'm retired, so as soon as I get used to the new lifestyle and catch up on all the unfinished projects, I plan on starting up the videos again. Tom

    Good guided tap wrench?

I do all my chamfering after tapping with a cordless drill to save time. I'll pre-chamfer if I'm hand tapping to help start the tap, but when power tapping with a spiral point tap I've never found it to be necessary. Tom

1st metal lathe....basic beginner cutters carbide or hss?

I actually don't know of a source for pre-ground lathe tools, but grinding your own is a pretty basic skill when it comes to operating the lathe. Check out the following video, grab a few blanks, and give it a shot. You may want to grab some mild steel square stock as well for practice, because...
