Tales from the day job as a Marine Technician

Why not apply the same economic logic to Jeeps? You could drive a five year old Toyota Camry four cylinder for much less. I’m sure you know many Jeepers who have cheap or poorly maintained hardware that has broken and cost them thousands. That’s why the jokes are that JEEP stands for: Just...

Tales from the day job as a Marine Technician

This is the wiring job a friend of mine did on his cruising sailboat.

Tales from the day job as a Marine Technician

We subscribe to the “Large ocean / small boat” theory of boating. 150hp Yamaha SW on a RibCraft 6.5. Upgraded Garmin GPS. Wanted radar but retrofit was cost prohibitive.

Ridgid or Dewalt compact table saw?

I’m in the market for a portable table saw. We can’t leave it set up, and it will go back and forth between two places. My first project will be cutting 4mm Okoume Plywood for van paneling. The sheets are 5’x10’ and will be cut to sizes ranging from 25”x25” up to 42” wide and 8’ long. The 2nd...

    Cedar decking

Should have measured them when I got them....

    Cedar decking

I've had the new wood a month or so now, going to check moisture level before I start installing. It's inside and that garage gets hot as blazes in the summer sun.

    Cedar decking

Cedar lasted 34 years, and I’d already replaced some of it.

    Cedar decking

That raises another question. The decking is currently nailed. Should I go to screws instead? This is the deck. We don't get out on it much but it's a nice detail. All the junk underneath is gone.

    Cedar decking

We have an elevated deck on our place in NH. The 1”x4” Cedar decking was installed tight: probably to create a dry space underneath. Snow and ice built up and unsurprisingly, it’s rotted out. I’m going to install the new material with a gap - but how much? Temperatures are extreme (-20 to 95)...

Looking to buy a nutsert/rivnut tool

Been using the 13” Astro Pneumatics 1442 to install McMaster heavy wall 1/4” Nutserts. It has the quick change head and came with mandrels up to 5/16. Wouldn’t want anything smaller.

Why do people do this? I just don't understand.

Had pretty good luck putting mildly rusted tools like pliers in Vinegar for a few days. We live near the ocean. Rust never sleeps.

    HF jack died....

We have a 20 year old steel Craftsman that has stopped working. Going to have to find a service manual as I can’t believe it has failed.

    DeWalt 14.4V afterlife?

DeWalt annoyed me by changing from the 18V [nominal] to the 20V [Max rating] form factor. Have substantial $$ in 18V and the stuff works great, so staying with 18 for now. Just bought another new Li-Ion 18V battery before they go away forever.

    DeWalt 14.4V afterlife?

In NH we have a 14.4V drill and light, two batteries and a charger. One battery is OK, the other is headed south. Got it all for free from work years ago. Turns out there are aftermarket Li-Ion batteries available, but would need a new charger. That makes the cost prohibitive. At home we have...

    Rivnut tool to end all.

We have an Aluma [Aluminum] trailer and want to put some nutserts in the bed. Should I use aluminum, steel, or stainless steel inserts? I’ll keep a flat head in thrm when not in use.

Looking for drill press - light fab duties

Looked on CL. Used drill press sellers seem to think they are selling wine, not used drill presses. Saw a Grizzly for sale for $450. Looked it up and new price is $475. Currently have a Ryobi bought used for $50 with a vise. I overpayed....

Looking for drill press - light fab duties

What about https://www.lowes.com/pd/PORTER-CABLE-8-Amp-12-Speed-Floor-Drill-Press/1000132463 I’m only drilling sheet metal and 1/8” aluminum most of the time.

    Chain Saw Recommendation

Haven’t bought a battery chain saw yet. We have an 18V DeWalt reciprocating Saw. We use it with a demolition blade for trimming stumps and other wood near the ground.
