The only bad way to store them is outside. The sun will do a number on them. Look at some trailer tires that have been sitting out for sometime and you will/should see them starting to dry rot. The wife's has a spot to put in a 3/8 drive extention and then turn off. I have seen in the filter box that they come with a plug to drain the cartridge housing. Apparently they have differen casting for these. I haven't had issues with it when I reinstall by hand.
