    Proper prep and painting for bare steel

    Clean any oil etc. residue off. Sandblast to get the mill scale off. Spray with a automotive 2 part epoxy primer. Paint with whatever you like. Automotive paint would be the best option.

    I think you can wash it with vinegar (or some other chemical) & paint will stick to it well. I normally use an epoxy primer before any other topcoat.

    How do you choose which car battery to get?

    Several years ago i was told that there are only a couple battery manufacturers. 1 Was Johnson controls & i believe the other one was Deka. I'm not sure if that's 100% accurate as of today, but i am sure that there are way more battery brands than battery manufacturers.

    If it's real soft, it could be lead, but i'd think it would be some type of solder.

    Stick a nail in the end, or put a wire nut on the tube. No matter what you do, unless you use it often it's probably going to be junk. "The Right Stuff" gasket maker seems like it's the longest lasting in the container.
