    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

Next up, getting that stubborn framing inspection finalized. To backtrack a bit, I had two inspections that must be passed surrounding framing of the building: 1) Shear wall inspection – since my walls are so tall, they need to be engineered to prevent them falling over. I have the plans...

    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

So back-tracking a little bit... Where to begin… When we last left our hero, the shop was framed, roofed, and that’s it… As I started contemplating how I was going to put color onto this thing, I quickly realized we needed to pick a good color. Emily (my beautiful wife) has a friend who is...

No, your eyes are not deceiving you... Framer screwed up. I was clear that I wanted board and batten siding on two visible (to me) sides @ 16" centers. He put plywood siding over the T1-11 to fix error on his dime. It was about a $600 mistake for him. I don't have too much sympathy for him...

High Lift to clear windows above garage door?

So, installer guy got back to me. Amarr engineering said no big deal, they recalc'd the springs and cost is no different. I asked him if there was any loss of robustness with this change, or decreased life, etc... He said there would be no issues associated with opening it further. So...

High Lift to clear windows above garage door?

Thank you for the replies guys - all good advice. I hear everyone with the Keep it Simple advice - I don't want that big of a door not working right with my kids around. As I am waiting for concrete anyway before doors go in, I will wait to hear what the engineers at Amarr say and update...

    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

Thanks guys! A slab is definitely next on the list. My concrete guy is backed up and is saving my job for later as it is a covered pour and could be done in rough weather. No inside shots yet, other than the ones with my red truck above...

High Lift to clear windows above garage door?

I have not considered a roll up door. Do they offer insulated roll up doors?

High Lift to clear windows above garage door?

This exact thought occurred to me as well. Just thought it would be nice, and if door is being installed and it is easy, why not have it up and out of way? If it's a pita, then no harm no foul with blocking the windows...

Framing! So, one more story with this shop build – on Friday July 5th, I decide to check up on the framer that was hired to frame this thing. I looked for him on angieslist – cant’ find him, so I google search him. One of the first links that comes up is a story about five arrests in Portland...

    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

I’ve been remiss with my updates lately – apologies! After concrete was poured on April 16 (I couldn’t believe concrete had actually been poured!!) The concrete guys came back and removed their forms – fantastic group of professionals! They did a great job. So, the next step with this...

    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

I’m pleased to say that a lot has happened on the shop (or “Accessory Building” as I call it when county is around) in the last few weeks. On 4/11, the footing forms passed inspection (!!!!!) & on Friday, 04/12, the footings were poured (8 yards). I notified Mr. Compliance of the passed...

    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

April 10th Finally things are moving! Work begins! So last week my contractor, Steve, brought his concrete guy by the house. The concrete guy immediately noticed my dirt wasn’t quite level. Sigh… So – not wanting to give Steve any breathing room on schedule, I called around and found...

    The Boring Garage, 36 x 44 x 15 in Boring, Oregon

February 25: Last week (Thursday) I received a letter from the county stating my plans were ready to pick up and my permit fee was $500 more than I expected!! )(^&)(*&%? (For the record, I dropped plans off on 01/23, and they were approved on 02/14, with official notification from the county...

January 22nd, went to the county this morning… Was there right when they opened at 9 am. I waited until all the offices opened up - (someone should tell them they open at 9 am – not all the individual departments know this, not this guy though!) I kept the sign in sheet from last week –...

So, I begin drawing up my shop plans. Luckily, I have a friend who is helping me contract who helped me (A LOT) with drawing the plans up. I got them all done and let me tell you, they are beautiful - I'm very proud of them! LOL I was maintaining contact with the county compliance officer...

Below is my saga of the shop build - this is paraphrased from emails I shared with friends and family, edited a bit for public consumption - please excuse and past tense / present tense confusion... Two weeks after we finish excavating, I get home from work and there was a notice on my door...
