The hidden costs of NEC's "All AFCI" rules.

Don’t know about present day, but for a time Indiana was the only state not requiring AFCI. A house burned down in Indianapolis. I saw a video with a city fire marshall. He stated that arc fault breakers would have saved that house. Nothing further. I tried to call him & he had moved to another...

For sure. Every authority has his price.

    Wera Tool-Check Plus

I appreciate good tools but good storage right up there with them. Easy to keep handy, easy to spot anything out of place, easy to pass around. Good on workbench or good in the trunk. Way too many kits of all types have no container or the flimsy plastic shelf package that doesn't hold up. We...

The hidden costs of NEC's "All AFCI" rules.

Seen it many times with live troubleshooting. I have been dreaming for years of the evil things I could do to those authorities who pushed AFCI down our throats. Frightens me that I could even think of such evil. But it also frightens me that they think it's a good idea.

Any estimate how much it will cost to replace this old panel?

Don’t think I’ve seen CH XO. Power line is what they acquired from Westinghouse, BR from Bryant & CH is their tan handle breakers. Those are the versions I’ve seen much of. Never saw a Zinsco bolt on. Never heard of them before. This field is deep & wide; more stuff out there than any one guy...

IMHO, disallowing backstabbing would be a far better fix than AFCI. Most of the burned devices I replaced were backstabbed. It is a poor wiring method.

Hubbell didn’t make light bulbs but did make HID light fixtures. GE did make some light bulbs and fluorescent tubes. They at least had their name on them.

The Real Reason Craftsman Tools Are so Darned Popular

I had a Craftsman rolling tool box that I really liked. Roller with 2 red trays. Box was great for chunky power tools & batteries. Bottom tray was open, for large & long stuff. Top tray had long & short sections for all kinds of stuff. Top was weatherproof, had a groove for holding pipe or rod...

The Real Reason Craftsman Tools Are so Darned Popular

I have thought that too. But I had some dealings with them as a fellow merchant in the mall. I saw back in the 80’s that Sears could find stupid ways to do simple things. I’m not surprised that they overlooked a prime opportunity.

The hidden costs of NEC's "All AFCI" rules.

Yes, I just heard about ABB but hadn’t heard about Haier. Maybe ABB will improve the electrical. GE has generally been the poorest quality of all brands IMHO. Only FPE & Zinsco were worse. Sadly too, quality is slipping in other brands as well. My previous employer had 4 or 5 Square D I Line...

Blank covers cost more than breaker to fill empty spot!

I don't do much now that I'm in maintenance but I used to run most ranges on a 40 amp breaker and #8 Romex. I saw one wall oven that needed 40 amps too, Bosch brand. Be aware.

I am an electrician and I hate AFCI breakers. 10 times the cost and no real benefit. I have replaced a lot of burned switches and receptacles that were on AFCI breakers that didn't trip. Yet, one of them may trip for no reason at all, then you hunt and peck all day for causes. This and a few...

    Another Hammer

RTM, one of the Cheney & 1 of the Motorola look similar. Prices were amazing weren’t they? A dozen then for less than one today. But people earned a dollar a day back then too. 🤣

Fellas, I found another weird looking hammer. Can you help please?

Electricians hammers have an extra long neck, allowing hammering into deep junction boxes & have straight claw for ripping. I’ve seen very few in recent years, since we all use battery drills & screws now to mount boxes.

    Another Hammer

Thx, I’ll look at this. As an electrician, I have generally used a ripping hammer. But I have used various claw hammers too, just never had one or saw one with such a sharp curve. I’m thinking it gives extra leverage for pulling nails. Haven’t tested it yet. Also hope to find a trademark when I...

    Another Hammer

Another hammer from the farm. I never saw one with the extreme curve on the claws. Could possibly date back before 1930 if it was wife’s grandfather who had it. Anyone seen this before?

    Hardware Store Closing

I have long tried to buy from local stores when I could. Big box has the edge in keeping longer hours that mom & pop can’t afford to do.

    Recognize This Hammer?

Yes, I saw it there. Thanks much. Now I have to find a handle or make one.

Where have you been all my life tools............

A coworker used to have a Greenlee set similar to that, very heavy duty. I have had a couple of cheaper types that do ok until they get crushed under or behind something. Where did you buy this?
