Tools you bought just because, "Some day, I might need that !"

I have a number of coarse-tooth Snap-on dog bone wrenches, most with date codes from the 90's. As you say, I use Gearwrench-style ratcheting wrenches exclusively now. But, I just can't bring myself to dispose of them yet. I keep them for that "old-ball" job where they might be ideal.

Is there a tools to remove this nut?

I would say that the slots would indicate a threaded assembly. As has been mentioned, it might be best to break the original handle off (which is split anyway) and grip the nut with soft (aluminum or copper) vise jaws to unscrew it. The male threads might be peened to prevent loosening, so that...

    Air Compressor “Remove from use”date

I'm sure I'm on a lot of government lists by now.

    Air Compressor “Remove from use”date

I'm not sure it's OSHA approved, but I used a UL-listed extension cord of the same gauge and length. I've found it's less costly to buy an extension cord and re-purpose it for original cord replacements. Or, as a scrounger, I salvage cords from worn out appliances if they're in good condition.

    Air Compressor “Remove from use”date

I got a free oil-less direct-drive pancake compressor from a work associate. He was going to throw it away because he was nervous about the tank integrity, and had cut off the electrical plug. I, as an inveterate scrounger, took it home and installed a new cord. I've been running it for several...

    Snap-On line wrenches. Which style?

Like many have said on this thread, I bought double-ended flare nut wrenches for the additional sizes versus the flare end/open end style. I have found that once the nut is loose, a standard-width open end (of which I have many), would run the nut in and out. That meant having two wrenches...

Do we have a favorite grease gun?

My "go-to" brand for manual grease guns and related accessories was always Lincoln. I also have a pistol-grip Plews that I like.

    Advice on rosebud torch head

I apologize for being a bit off topic, but has anyone found a rosebud tip for an older (1980's) Harris torch? I can't locate one anywhere, and would like to add one to my torch accessories.

    Advice on rosebud torch head

I always thought rosebud tips were for heating large areas. To apply localized heat for a bend, I would use a cutting tip as has been suggested. It will consume less fuel, too.

    GearWrench ratchets - 90T or 120XP?

I have long-handled 120XP ratchets in both 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch drives and I really like them. The only potential drawback might be the thick heads, but I haven't encountered a clearance issue in any work I've done.

New to me Vintage Craftsman tool box

Those tool boxes brought back memories for me, as I had the identical ones purchased in the early eighties. I later added a middle box but eventually needed more storage, so I sold them to a friend from work and bought a larger Craftsman stack. The drawer slides are durable if they're kept lubed...

    Disappointed with Williams Rachet…

I agree that the vintage round-head Williams' ratchets are superb. Low back drag, precise clicks, and high tooth count. Really an excellent design. It took precision machining to manufacture them, with the fine-threaded lock ring, dual pawls, and the broached teeth. No smart manufacturer would...

Anybody use this type of battery lifter?

I agree with you on this issue, so there's at least two of us. Battery installation seems simple enough, but there are a myriad of ways to screw it up.

    E-Torx Quandry

I've noticed in several service manuals that "the manufacturer recommends this fastener not be re-used", a comment frequently related to brake caliper bracket bolts. I think it has to do with potential liability. For my vehicles, I'll carefully inspect the old bolts and make an assessment on...

Cman USA -V- 44985 1/2 ratchet. Selector internal tab broken

To get the correct piece, you might have to buy a similar rusted ratchet at low cost and strip it for parts.

Craftsmen USA - what am I missing here?

I agree, those RHFT ratchets are great and still one of my favorites. I'm always looking for a mint vintage flex-head version in 3/8 drive. Fortunately, I have the coveted 1/2 inch drive flex-head.

What's a good impact wrench that won't break the bank?

I have this Husky impact wrench and its performance is excellent. It's great for subframe work and other confined areas. A really good value.

    Ratchet Snap Ring Pliers?

The best way to determine that would be to gauge the hole diameter in the snap ring. Do you have a random length of wire that approximates the diameter of the hole, and then measure the wire diameter with a caliper or micrometer? A wire of any type that just slides through the hole would be ideal.

    1/4 universal metric sockets

In 1/4" drive swivel sockets, Snap-on really shines as AEAdam has said. It's one of their tool lines that is worth the price of admission. I built my Snap-on set piecemeal, as I had the funds to buy the sizes I needed most over time. I think many of them came from ebay.
