I think they were NWS. I bought some from Lowes, and they looked the same as the old made in germany pics, they were labelled "forged with US steel" or similar, but nowhere indicated the actual country of manufacture.
+1 cat/williams usa, or proto. Taiwan Craftsman V series (facom?) actually aren't bad and can be affordable. Bundy was a born Legend, that game was just another example of it.
I've noticed most garages i go into have at least one vintage USA grease gun on the floor/in a corner somewhere that the resident/owner would be glad to be rid of.
I use the block of wood and ratchet method mentioned above, even though I have impact wrenches. That said, if you have a compressor, you can get a used 1/2" impact affordably, and the ryobi you mentioned is probably not bad for $100.
