I like the new arrangement. I might consider when you do get rid of the little cabinet pushing your lathe over towards the bench. Looks like you currently would be pressed for head room trying to use it where it is. I also noticed we have the exact same lower cabinets. I built a large shelving...

Looking good! A place for everything is the key to an organized shop. I don't have the first, so be default I don't have the second. Good on you. I like the idea of using peg board as the door panels, but I would wonder how much dust would get through them. The main purpose of having closed off...

I think both diesel (which would evaporate) and oil are less flammable that most stains, but I couldn't prove it.

I've been following for awhile, but this is my first comment. I really like your build. I love the use of mostly found products. Since you want the old oil stained look, have you thought about using old oil for your stain? We used this technique on the farm when I was a kid for fencing.

That thing is so cool! Could you get your lights hooked up to it too? And eventually dust collection and a heater?

What is a good wood hand planer??

Stanley, Sargent, Miller Falls, Fuller, Keen Kutter. They're all over ebay. The trick is to just buy an old one, like from the 50's or earlier. 1890s to 1940s was kind of the golden era for hand planes. Good luck!

Wilton bullet vise restoration can grinder hit all parts????

The 10" is currently 110, but I will most likely switch it over to 220 when I redo the bearings. And Outlaw is right, VFD is the way to go. For $100-200 you can get a 3PH motor up an running. I currently have a few on my Christmas list. And the REALLY nice thing about using a VFD is that you can...

Wilton bullet vise restoration can grinder hit all parts????

Here is the 8 Here is the 10. The PO added some baldor shields and painted it that grey green color. The 10 is a 1hp and the 8 is a 1/2hp. The 10 will be needing bearings sooner than later.

RL, I'm not sure if it's the vise your looking for but the Habitat for Humanity off of Santa Fe has a craftsman vise that has a lot of denominational shape to it, it's mounted to the bench in their receiving room. You can see if from the show room. They might sell it on the cheap or be willing...

Wilton bullet vise restoration can grinder hit all parts????

I'll take some pics tonight, the 10" came with the original B&D stand and is complete, the 8" has no stand and is set up exactly like you 6", missing the right guard. And as for emailing, you can click on their name in the top left and select either "Send Private Message" or "Send Email"

Wilton bullet vise restoration can grinder hit all parts????

This is 100% off topic, but I am geeking out over your grinder. I have the exact same one in the 8" and 10", but didn't know they made that frame type in a 6". Now I have to add another thing to the quest list....

Red Leader, I highly recommend this video for your BS set up. This guy is a guru. Also, do those tires need to be crowned? The sander is looking fantastic. It's currently 6 degrees out... I'm sure that's fine for panting ;)

Balane, how did you date your Rock Island? I just finished one and would be interested in its age.

Also a follow up question, were Rock Island and Parker related in anyway? The casting of this vise looks a lot like a few Parker's I've seen, especially the rear decorative wings

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Got my first vise refurb under my belt! It's a Rock Island 593 I picked up off CL for $20. It appears it was not babied, so I took some time to love on it. I was a little surprised as to the sloppiness of the casting on the back of the slide as pictured, I took some time to square it up, as...
