2026 Garage Sale Thread (15th Annual)

Happy New Year! I look forward to this being a great year for all you pickers. If this seems familiar, it is because I'm shamelessly plagiarizing from mikeinri's opening post from 2025. Welcome to the 15th annual edition of the Garage Journal Garage Sale Thread! Huge thanks to @mikeinri for...

Photos Load Slowly With 10MB Bandwidth

I tried on my normal Duckduckgo and Chrome with similar results. Since I posted, our phone line developed noise, and the technician put in an order to have a new section of underground line trenched in. I'll wait and see if that helps. I'm further from the DSLAM than they recommend, so it is...

How did I successfully misuse (and not abuse) a tool today?

I have used old worn-out wood augers to bore holes in dirt for many years now. It started when I had to bore a hole under a sidewalk to run a drain line from a basement. I've even welded steel rod extensions on the shanks. It takes a pretty strong electric drill for a larger auger.

Question about a Craftsman toolbox and rolling cabinet

Remline offered "flying saucer" casters as an option on lowers.

let's see your craftsman block grinders

I always wondered how the old guys sharpened the blades of their screwdrivers to a knife edge. Now I know it was this fixture, that is "IDEAL FOR SHARPENING BLADES, CHISELS, SCREWDRIVERS, ETC."

    Show Your Vintage Knife

I first noticed that my father had this knife at least 40 years ago. I'm not sure where he got it, or that he ever used anything except the blade.

Also called a "seamer." Others make compound action versions very similar to this.

This free SO box even worth it ?

When I work metal back into shape, I try to imagine how it got into the distorted shape and reverse that. I don't try to "force" the metal back into shape. I try to "coax" it back into shape.

2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

Yesterday was windy and rainy. Typical weather for the time of year. I hit the monthly flea market and found a few items. Less than $40 out the door: Ken Tool 33220A T20A tire iron 30" long Unmarked grease bar 16" long. This is shorter than my Plomb and Herbrand versions Plomb USA 1508 body...

    Heller Bearing Scraper.

Older catalogs from sources like Timken, MRC (Marlin Rockwell), and SKF will show that ball and roller bearings could be made to quite close tolerances fairly early in the 20th Century. This was accomplished by selective fitting components and grading the bearing based on runout and end play...

    Identify Pump Oiler Nozzle?

The only place I see them is as the K7 on Schaublin lathes. Perhaps there is another name for them? Nothing turns up in a search for "oil ******," and searching for "oil fitting" turns up something close on McMaster-Carr, but with 1/4-32 NEF threads!

The Stihl MS 261 - The Best Chainsaw Stihl Currently Makes!

I bought an 026 Pro about 35 years ago, and loved it. I use a 20" bar on it and 3/8" chisel chain on all my saws. I used the 026 to fall, limb, and buck Douglas Fir trees up to 16" diameter in a thinning operation. It was great until it was stolen, and I replaced it with a MS260, also with a...

    Identify Pump Oiler Nozzle?

I picked up a pump oiler at an estate sale that has a very different nozzle than the standard Golden Rod one. It appears to be for a specific fitting similar to a zerk. The fellow was an avid woodworker, which may give a clue.

    X/32 " (i.e. 19/32 ", 21/32 ") socket set recommendations

45/64 is .7031" and 3/8 Whitworth is .710" 53/64 is .8281" and 7/16 Whitworth is .820" 57/64 is .8906" and 1/2 Whitworth is .920" So none of these would be a good match. Not good matches for metric, either.
