Trying to justify $150k on a new small shop

I could never justify $150,000 for various reasons & would sacrifice the balcony view on the left side of the main house. Use the existing garage as the shop, install a new/modified retaining wall & a pole building would be my suggestion also. You could leave the doors to the balcony where they...

How to convert a converted room back to garage

Unfortunately for homeowners the tax assessment office & the building department don't always work together & don't seem to care what each one does. The tax assessor will adjust values accordingly to take in the maximum assessed value. The building department usually doesn't get involved until...

How to convert a converted room back to garage

Being too far away to do the work yourself leaves you at the mercy of a contractor or a handyman that you may or may not be able to trust. Trying to schedule a project like this with a contractor before listing the place for sale can be a major problem, especially if you have a buyer that wants...

    Door sill bracing

Put something between the sill & the pressure treated wood if that is aluminum, it will corrode it.

    Drilling into the foundation?

I've drilled into my foundation which is always a pain compared to wood. Any chance you can suspend the shelving from the joists in the basement ceiling?

    Best Casement Windows?

Keep your eyes on craigslist. I managed to get several of mine from there, all brand new in the color I needed. Got both of these small windows together for $50 & the double awning for $250. Also got 6'x6' triple window with the ends that are casement for $600.

    Best Casement Windows?

Here's some of the Marvin Integrity windows I installed. The 3 larger ones are sliders, the smaller one is an awning window. Elsewhere in the house I have a casement that I installed & will be putting in 3 more this spring. They are fiberglass cladded on the outside & natural pine on the inside.

    Best Casement Windows?

Most of the major window manufacturers aren't drastically different in quality. I've installed Andersen, Pella, Crestline & Marvin as well as a few other brands that I don't recall the names of. On my own house, I had a serious issue with Pella a while back. I also read up on a class action suit...

    FB Scams

I NEVER see ads on my desktop PC when using zuckerbook because I use a site called FB Purity. It's a free download but they do ask for donations. Aside from ridding the site of ads, you can modify the page to show or hide other things you normally can't control. I first started using it when...

Where do you store your gas cans?

Right now my full cans are in my garage on a dolly right at the backside of the roll up door. It's not an air tight door so fumes, if any, dissipate. I was keeping them in my shed but had to bring them into the garage for the snow blower & generator. I also hate the newer style cans with the...

    Black walls

Agreed, dark colors are not great for a shop environment if you want to see what you're doing. The repair shop behind my office at work was a dark gray inside. It was just bare blocks that were never painted, but they were a dark shade. They installed better lighting at one point which improved...

    Workshop foundation ideas

How about using auger style anchors & a simple gravel pad raised up to keep the shed above ground level? If you rough in your utilities you can cap them for future tie ins. Install pipes, conduit, or whatever else you might want to add later and extend them at least 5 feet outside the perimeter...

    Siding replacement

Did the same on my house with 1 x 8 rustic channel, cedar. It was installed directly against the Tyvek wrap initially & in some areas upside down. After removing it, repairing damage, replacing windows & doors, I installed rigid foam, furring strips & then the siding.

Feedback on Three Car Garage with Lift Layouts

As for the $500,000+ cost, that's insane. o_O Pole buildings are substantially cheaper, I saved at least 35% when I did mine & it doesn't look like a farm or industrial building at all.
