French Door in place of your Garage Door?

What kind of siding do you have on the garage? Most of the time when I see someone put in a set of french doors in place of a garage door they don't match the siding so it looks like a patch job (Quick google search for example picture...

Work Bench Height - new question

I would keep it level, and make the highest point 42". You will probably find that there is sometimes a need for a shorter bench. I am 6' tall and have a few benches in my shop, most are 34" or 36" high, and one is around 40". The taller bench is ok for working on small items and parts. But...

    Gilmour's Garage (30x60 Toy Shed/Upstairs Loft)

You may want to temporarily brace the bottom of the poles before you backfill. You may have already done this but I can't tell from the pics. When you start pushing dirt in with the bobcat it will move those poles around.

    Newb build time.

X2 ... you need a header across the top of that opening. The trusses will support the roof weight but the wall above the garage door will sag under its own weight without a header.

    Looking for Driveway alternatives

In addition to the plastic product that was shown in another post, there are also a number of concrete paver products that allow grass to grow. One example is: http://www.soilretention.com/drivablegrass.html

South Bend Lathe - what's it worth?

Thanks for all the info/comments. I have been wanting a Lathe and the guy with the lathe was willing to trade for a horse trailer so I was thinking about doing it. Like has been pointed out I can't think of anything I would need that long of a lathe for except wasting space so I think I'll...

South Bend Lathe - what's it worth?

Thanks for the reply. I have only seen pictures of the lathe so I don't know the exact dimensions, but you are right the 12' is probably the total length. I have used lathes in the past but I am not very familiar with how they are spec'd/ measured.

South Bend Lathe - what's it worth?

I am looking at a South Bend metal lathe, believed to be 1950's model. It is 16" swing x 12 foot w/ a 220v single phase motor. How much is something like this worth in average working condition?

Made in the USA - A CEO That Finally Gets It!

That is good to know. My brother and I both have B&W gooseneck hitches in our trucks and I always recommend them to other because they are great quality and easy to install. After seeing that video it makes me want to push their product to others even more.

How much height do you have to the bottom of your trusses at the side walls? How much height under the mezanine?

Our multi use pole barn 40 x 54

Looks good, do you have any more pictures? I like how the 'lean-to' extends around 3 sides. I have been thinking about doing the same with my existing pole barn.

    HELP! Question about Wallpaper/paint stripping

If the drywall wasn't painted before the wallpaper was glued up I would say tear out all the drywall and start over. You will spend more time ripping off wallpaper and plastering the walls to cover up all the drywall paper that gets ripped off than you would hanging new board. like rodnok1...

Is the compressor okay out in the shed?

What is the point of insulating it if there isn't going to be any type of HVAC serving the shed? It will still be at or near whatever the outside temperature is whether it is insulated or not, especially with a couple open air vents in the wall. I wouldn't insulate it, and make sure there is...

    Novice framing shed project...

Are there any caps over that ridge vent? In the picture it looks like the shingle over ridge vent but doesn't look like it has any shingles on it. it will probably leak at all the seams where each 4' section goes together if you don't put caps over it.

New lift installed in the garage...

Just wanted to add to all the interest you have had for the conquest. I had a Blue '88 TSi when I was in highschool and part of college. And I now have a Black '88 Starion. They are awesome cars .. but huge money pits. Funny, there is a post on the main page of Garage Journal today talking...

    how important are headers?

As long as it isn't load bearing you don't need a header. A 2x4 and maybe a couple cripple studs depending on the width of the doorway is all you need to hold up the sheetrock and top of the door frame.

    how important are headers?

if it is running parallel with the floor joists above it is most likely not load bearing. if it is running perpendicular to the joists it may or may not be. A lot of times, especially in older homes the basement would not have any walls at all when it was built, so there is most likely some...
