New collection: a taxonomy of hammers

I am not a huge hammer collector (I have maybe 6 – 8 that I use), but I ran into a hammer collector’s estate sale, and when in Rome and the price is right... Now I am! I just tried to pick the most unique ones. I need a little help identifying a few of them (see question marks). I have no idea...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I stumbled upon a Stephens' Parallel Vise last month and given its soiled condition (see photos), the seller only charged me $15. I put a little time cleaning it up this weekend and now it functions smoothly and doesn't look so bad. I didn't want to over-clean it, rather just back to something...

Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

The last few weekends, I’ve been fortunate on my Plomb quest. I’ve never before seen firsthand the Plomb Tool Company #2402,, 2403 and 2406 tool rolls, nor the Plomb Tool Co. 11/16” open end wrench. I don’t see a date code on it, just “PLOMB TOOL CO. L.A. CA.” Are these all late 1920’s -...

    Simmons & Shapleigh Arch Rivals.

Here is a recent find from the Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware Co. era. It is a Stanley No. 8, Type 11, plane with the company name on a composite rubber handle. The name was in use from 1901-1913, which corresponds well with the type 11 plane manufacture dates. Check out the DE logo, for Diamond...

J H Williams vintage hand tools

It took me awhile, but I finally filled out my Williams "Superjustable" wrench set, with only the 4" having the raised ring around the hanging hole. I finally picked up the 12" this weekend, along with the W-diamond K-2 roll of small DOE wrenches (7/32" x 13/64", 1/4" x 15/64", 5/16" x 1/4"...

Hi four.cycle. Six of the hex drive sockets are 3/8” hex drive. The smallest one is a 5/16” hex drive.

    2023 Garage Sale Thread

Small but interesting finds today: a wartime 1/4"-drive SK box with partial decal. Inside were seven knurled hex-drive sockets with no sizes or manufacturer name (any ideas?), five Plomb WF 1/4"-drive cadmium finish sockets, and a WF-8 Plomb 1/4" ratchet. I also picked up a Williams K-2 roll...

Show Us Your Cool Tool Logo

I have one for the thread. I picked this old pliers solely due to the logo, but I can not tie it to a manufacturer. It’s capital letters “M” and “H” surrounded by a larger “S”. Below are two “D”s separated by an upward pointing arrow. I have tried searching any/all combination of those...

    Barcalo Buffalo Tools

A recent find is this rather flat 6 1/4” long needle-nose pliers. The Barcalo stamp is in a small oval (see photo), while the back side has no markings. Nice knurling too.

    Show Your Vintage Utica Tools!

I picked up this 60-7 nipper recently which is stamped with "Utica Drop Forge & Tool Corp." and "Utica, N.Y. U.S.A." It has the wide handles with the great looking diamond checkered gripping pattern with the squared-off ends.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I know Canedy Otto is known more for its blacksmithing and drill press heritage, but I found and decided to restore a CANEDY OTTO MFG CO. 2 1/2 Bench Vise. It has 2 5/8" jaws, opens 2" and weigh 8 lbs. 5 oz. Its manufacturing location is noted as Chicago HTS. ILL.

    Stanley Plane ID help!

I think it is a Stanley Four Square Jack Plane (lower end plane). Should be 11 1/2” long with 1 3/4” wide cutter. Manufactured 1923-1930. No model number cast in the bed. They came with that stippled lever cap.

Pliers with "FORGED STEEL U.S.A." in depressed triangle

Great job four.cycle. It seems the company had at least three different versions of its company logo, and pliers with and without the knurling. Appreciate the research.

Pliers with "FORGED STEEL U.S.A." in depressed triangle

I’m bumping this thread one more time. My pliers have the same inverted triangle outlining the “Forged Steel USA” marking (also a lone "H" at the bottom). It has unique knurling as well. Any ideas of manufacturer or company history?
