Try buying three hockey pucks, drill a hole through the center of each, place one under each leg, and bolt through the puck to the floor.

it sounds that perhaps the failing regulator may have been contributing to your issues by not providing sufficient shielding gas to the puddle, allowing atmospheric gases to affect penetration, resulting in some of the poor conditions you describe. Did conditions improve with the switch to...
