Above 1200 Sq/FT Will it finally happen? 32x40 Garage/Shop build!

More progress... Got some snow in the middle of progress, can see the concrete "piers" in the vertical picture :) My open car trailer was heavily used during this project.

I'll post up some progress pics... Of course, I decided to start framing on one of the coldest days of the year... It was upper teens in the wall assembly pictures.

Well.... Almost a year later and a lot has taken place. I sure need to update this thread. To answer your question, I did have to trench from the building to the handhole at the edge of my property. SCH 40 3" piping was required. I hired an electrician to install the exterior meter panel/socket...

    Mohawk Lift Switch

@Bryan-B I bought the exact same lift as you - Mohawk System 1A-10K. It will be delivered in a couple weeks. If you wouldn't mind sharing how you wired your lift, that would be super helpful and appreciated. The Mohawk instructions reference 20A 2-Pole breaker with 12/4. Did you run 12/4...

    Above 1200 Sq/FT 30X40 w/ Loft and Half Court

Thanks. Good to know of a fellow CT'er on GJ. Have a small center console docked at Reynold's. Are you planning to heat/cool your garage area?

How would you build a 40x64x16 garage in New England?

Thank you for the response and perspective! I think I'm going to do exactly what you did, forgo the waterproofing on the exterior walls and apply the exterior XPS with the Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks spray foam as the adhesive.

    Above 1200 Sq/FT 30X40 w/ Loft and Half Court

@BlueChip Your project is very similar to mine except my 2nd floor is an "attic," not a true 2nd floor like yours. Looks like it'll be a really nice building for multiple uses. Did you put any black tar sealant on the below grade of your foundation walls? Any XPS foam board insulation anywhere...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Will it finally happen? 32x40 Garage/Shop build!

What is everyone's thoughts about putting XPS foam board on the exterior of my detached garage foundation walls directly on the concrete (no black tar/membrane)? Perhaps I should just put the XPS on the inside of the walls before backfilling and leave the outside walls alone? Thoughts?

How would you build a 40x64x16 garage in New England?

Incredible build and attention to detail! I'm building something that can fit inside yours, hahaha! Question... Did you put any foundation sealer (black rubberized) on your concrete walls before applying the XPS or did you put the XPS directly onto the concrete? My concrete folks told me to...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Will it finally happen? 32x40 Garage/Shop build!

I'm in North-Central CT, right on the border of southern Massachusetts. My concrete crew told me to put some foam board adhesive on the back of the XPS panels and stick them on the exterior concrete walls and be done with it. I'd like to put the black tar on the exterior of the walls, but it'll...

Here's a better pic of the form caddy's on the trailer and around the site. They place the caddy's in various spots around the footings and barely break a sweat! I remember back in the day, the form trucks having holders for the forms, but you had to lug each panel onto the truck. This certainly...

Yup, those are concrete forms and they are in steel baskets, which are picked up with the excavator to move them around. :)

Above 1200 Sq/FT Will it finally happen? 32x40 Garage/Shop build!

Some questions for the knowledgeable and experienced... I'd like to put Owens Corning 2" XPS foam board on the exterior walls down to the footings However... my concrete crew said that they don't water seal (black tar/membrane) the exterior walls of a detached garage since it doesn't have a...

Wife took a picture of me (through the dirty window and screen!) studying the foundations walls from upstairs.

Above 1200 Sq/FT Will it finally happen? 32x40 Garage/Shop build!

We have footings and fast forward to wall forms! I put some sleeves in the walls for potential sewage, water, and miscellaneous needs... Pretty excited that I can run a separate 200a service from the underground power junction directly to my garage and not need to tap into my house panel! Bonus...

Gotta love ledge! :( It wasn't unexpected as there was some ledge hammering that was needed when my house was built.... never know what is under the ground until you dig, right!?

Finally got the permit approved and foundation progress is happening and quickly! I'll post some pictures to get the thread caught up as the wall forms were pulled off today. Footing forms ready for concrete - 32x40 "main garage" with a 12x20 "accessory garage"

    Advice for a 40x40 build

Subscribing... I'm building a 32x40 garage/shop in CT for car storage and servicing and looked at various framing options - stick, post and beam and timber frame. Stick made the most sense for me because of the way I want to construct the building, insulate and finish the interior - 2x6 walls...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Will it finally happen? 32x40 Garage/Shop build!

Thanks! I was originally going to go with attic trusses, however, with the 24' dormer on one side and 2 6' dormers on the other and with the floor load specs that I requested and my snow load PSF, engineering didn't like it. :( Thanks for the tip on the thermal barrier to the 2nd floor, will...
