    My suggestion across the board is, if you are going to use it use hickory or ash for the handle

    I am by no means an expert by I would suggest a single solid piece. Nothing glued. Have you tried your local hardware store? Bring the head of your axe, Hatchet, tool in with you and see if a bit larger than the eye itself.
