    The VISES of Garage Journal

I've been restoring tools for a long time. I was introduced to KROIL some years ago. When I worked as a GE field engineer on steam turbines, we bought KROIL by the 55 gallon drum. KROIL website If you can find KROIL (not in aerosol) then soak that vise in KROIL for a week or month. Then it...

Glad to hear about you as a new aircraft mechanic! Hang in there buddy and don't give up. I am also a licensed aircraft mechanic but also a retired GE Field Engineer (steam turbines). And yes, I'm pretty old now - no longer turning wrenches for a living, but I was a licensed A&P back in the...

Any Rockwell Grinder People Out There?

Nice find. I have a similar grinder and love it. I balanced the wheels and "tuned" it the best I could. The result is that when I shut it down, it has the longest coast down of any bench grinder that I own. Im sure you'll be very happy with it, once you get it up and running. If you would like...

What is your preferred vice lube method?

Just some more thoughts: There are different kinds of sliding parts on a vise. The sliding parts between the larger surfaces, such as between the moveable sliding jaw and the base could be "way oil" Mobil Vactra Way Oil or typical multipurpose grease such as Mobilgrease EP series. And the...

What is your preferred vice lube method?

I use anti-seize on the stationary, large (covered thread) type vises. Cleanup is horrible, should anti-seize go somewhere unwanted. Fluid Film on smaller vises and tools that I restore, typically items that I handle or move around easily. Cleanup of Fluid Film just wipes up easily. The links...

    Scored a Beverly B2!

Congrats on the new tool...!!! I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. It typically takes a very long time to hunt down a Beverly Shear for a reasonable price. I finally found a B-3 last year. I was thrilled to find it here in Wisconsin for only $325. Note: In the pic below, the shear was...

    Favourite work boots?

A thought regarding wedge sole vs a defined heel. On some construction sites that I have worked, a wedge sole is prohibited and therefore, a defined heel is required. This is due to wedge soles tend to slip off the scaffold rungs when climbing or descending. Personally, I have one boot of each...
