Left over Motor Oil - Use or not?

I’m finding this to be more of a problem as manufacturers are calling for a specific specification on new cars. I’ve got a case of perfectly good M1 5w-30 that doesn’t meet spec for any of my current vehicles. Leftover BMW oil for a 2012 model that no longer meets spec for a 2019, etc. My...

    Electronic/Digital Torque wrench?

I still use a vernier caliper I inherited from my dad, although it has become more and more of a challenge with my “less than perfect” eyesight.

    Milwaukee M18 Impact Choice

I bought a 3/8” M18 2654-20 back in 2016. Haven’t used my air gun since. Handles lug nuts on my cars, truck, and trailer in with no problem. Used it for multiple suspension jobs, etc. I recently bought a car which calls for 140 ft-lb lug bolt torque. The 3/8 would remove them, but had to...

    Electronic/Digital Torque wrench?

I recently picked up a GW 85079 because I needed both higher torque range than my old clicker as well as angle. It comes with a learning curve, but I’m getting the hang of it. Kind of a nuisance to change settings, although you can do preset values to simplify things. Overall, I prefer...

Lights not working on Liftmaster 8500 openers

I also have two 8500s. Openers work great. I gave up altogether on the lights. Wasn’t worth the hassle.

    Measuring out for a lift

My baseplate is 24” out, so the column is about 27”. Don’t think I’d want it any closer, given how many times I pass through there.

Time to buy an impact wrench. Air or Battery powered?

I bought a 3/8 Milwaukee M18 Fuel impact a few years ago. Haven’t used my air gun since. For the rare instance that it can’t handle it getting out the breaker bar is still easier than firing up the compressor and dragging the hose around.

Using click torque wrench at the low end of range

My 1/2" Digitork was dead on at the low end, 4% off at the top. Go figure. At 8 ft-lbs, I'd just use a small wrench and trust my feel and experience.

    Another Liftmaster Question. Poor Range

I have two LM 8500 openers side by side. Using the same remote, one door opens from 50 ft away, the other one I have to get out of the car and hold the remote up in the air in front of the door. Wood construction, similar placement, no lights, fiberglass doors.

    28x30 Detached Garage Lift/Loft

I went 28 x 30 as well, but with 10 x 10' doors. With 12' ceiling I can lift my E36 M3 all the way up with the doors open. Or my Golf R. Great minds think alike....

Calibrating a Craftsman Digitork torque wrench

I have a similar wrench that I bought in 1978. I had access to a calibrator for many years. Every time I checked it it was off a consistent 4% across the entire range, so I just adjust my settings accordingly. It’s getting hard to read the setting through the little window....

8ft T12 LED Retrofit advice needed

The HD/Feit option puts out 42% LESS light than the Satco bulbs I chose at 3200 vs 5500 and are nearly twice the price per bulb. The flourescent tubes I took out were rated at 5300, so I didn't want to "upgrade" to less light. I don't know if those numbers are based on similar standards or...

8ft T12 LED Retrofit advice needed

Just to follow up on this, I just installed the Satco S9919 bulbs in my garage. I’m really pleased with the results. Maybe 5 minutes per fixture to rewire, once I figured out how to get up to them. Box of 10 delivered from lightingnewyork.com $231. Unfortunately, I really needed 12, but...

    Braun Underhood light

It works OK for general area light, but won’t replace a handheld light. I just did a water pump, and found I needed to get light close up to see what I was doing. Agree on the magnets. Kind of wimpy.

8ft T12 LED Retrofit advice needed

Found these today. At least it is a brand I've heard of. 5500 lumens, UL listed, 5-year warranty, and appear to be available in sub-case quantities. http://www.greenelectricalsupply.com/8-foot-43-watt-double-ended-ballast-bypass-fa8-led-tubes-5000k.aspx No experience with this product...

I was looking at those Hyperikon bulbs, but they make fewer lumens than my old fluorescents per the specs.

    Best cordless LED drop light?

Another vote for this one. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve dropped it, and it still works.

    Electric Parking Brake

Can't speak to others, but BMW and VW use a motor to actuate a ball screw mechanism attached to the rear calipers to apply pressure to the brake pads. The mechanism is self locking, so no power is required to keep it engaged. If the switch is activated with the car in motion, it actually...

    Electric Parking Brake

I did them on a 2012 BMW X3 by removing the actuator and cranking the mechanism out with an allen wrench. Since then, I picked up a Foxwell scan tool, and used it to do my 2016 VW. Found this on YT for a Fusion: Perhaps the same trick works for your Edge.

    Help diagnose bedroom light problems

I was having similar problems. Many of my receptacles were wired using the plug-in slot instead of the screw terminals. 30 years later, I started having problems with dead receptacles and lights. I've had to go through and rewire or replace several receptacles to fix them. For some reason, it...
