    workbench ideas please

I just ordered a new bench from McMaster-Carr. Its a 60" x 36" mobile work surface. Should be here by Tuesday. I also ordered a 96" butcherblock workbench to put at the end of my shop. They have a lot of options to build your own. 7 gauge thick top. -Jimmy

    Tankless Water Heater

I've got a Noritz 931m and we are very impressed with its output. We just did a remodel and our Noritz feeds 3 baths (1 rainhead, 2 Speakman showerheads w/o restrictors), dishwasher, laundry, and kids and guests no problem. We did, however, have to make sure our gas line was up to snuff and our...

    workbench ideas please

That's a great idea with the 2" receiver hitches. I just got a length of it and stuck one into my soon-to-be-poured driveway. Took a few minutes to weld on some big plates to keep it from turning and to anchor it. Here it is stuck in the ground. My tubing bender, belt sander, and vise...

    workbench ideas please

They look like some big yellow-zinc plated leveling feet available from McMaster-Carr. If they have a 4" base, the listing for this type of foot has the thread pitch at 1"-8, a max load of 20,000 lbs, and at only $24.16! Link to catalog page Should be simple enough to build one of your own...

    workbench ideas please

I saw a pic of some of the work that goes on around there. Nice billet aluminum jigs. http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=28316&d=1193471759

    workbench ideas please

I like these... -Plenty of overhang for clamping work to the surface -Super thick to ensure squareness -The whole work surface can be used as a ground for welding -Holes are tapped to provide solid mounts for jig fixtures -Access to all around the table (I'm not a fan of having the bench up...

What to do with a large vacuum

    New guy from So Cal

Welcome, Tony. I'm in L.A., and I just had my slab poured last Friday for a 21x21 garage (biggest I could fit on the property). It'll be finished with Epoxy as soon as everything inside the garage is done (electrical, drywall, lighting, etc.) -Jimmy

Which color is the best and why?

In a few months after the slab is cured, I was thinking about going with a really light grey, almost white color. I know all of the warnings against, but I've got hundreds of hours on the push broom and mop already logged in. Here are some examples.... Maybe I'm just being unrealistic...

    Layering vapor barriers?

I'll have my buddy drop on by during the pour to call me when the fiasco happens. ;) Everyone is on board now with the plans. Both contractors know what psi to use, no added water, light broom finish (as per the epoxy flooring guys), no slope, keeping slab moist for the two days I'm out of...

    Layering vapor barriers?

Update: Contractor and conrete contractor were just following architect's plans that had been approved for code. Evidently, its a relatively common practice out here to place a 2 inch "blotter layer" of sand over the vapor barrier. Plans called for this atop a 20 mil vapor barrier and a 4"...

What unique features did you do or wish you had done when planning you garage?

Well, I'm in the midst of my construction and here's some things that have occured to me last minute... -Some extra studs to mount the basketball backboard (son is only three, but I'm sure this will come in handy in a few years) -Doubled up studs (sistered?) for a metal stock rack and wheel...

    Layering vapor barriers?

Update: Contractor will be talking to engineer on Monday to see what the fuss is all about (MY fuss). I actually found a great .pdf file I sent to both the architect and the contractor to read and discuss. Here it is for reference: Omitting "blotter layer of crushed stone" From a discussion I...

    Layering vapor barriers?

You guys are absolutley correct! I just emailed my contractor (I'm out of town at the moment) and asked why the crushed stone is ON TOP of the vapor barrier. I owe you guys a big keg of Sierra Nevada. Keep you posted... -Jimmy

    Layering vapor barriers?

Thanks for doing the research, bmwpower! I think I may be a bit meticulous but I just wanted to make sure. I'm well away from any groundwater sources and the slab is pretty much above grade. I was a little unimpressed that my contractor just put down the standard 6mil instead of what was...

    Layering vapor barriers?

My concrete contractor initially put down a 6 mil vapor barrier until I had requested a thicker one. My architect's plans spec'd 20 mil, so they triple layered the vapor barrier with 6 mil, then 10 mil, and then another 10mil sheet. The crushed stone went on top today and the pour is slated to...
